  2. 2. Introduction • Ryan Vucina most recently held the position of Chief Operations Manager for Vucina Construction, where he was responsible for managing multimillion-dollar projects and developing properties from the ground up. During high school, Ryan Vucina was involved in competitive judo. Judo focuses on basic moves that the average person could employ in his or her life. Judo is commonly used in self- defense training and provides the most benefits, since individuals do not have to spend as long training for it as they would karate or other martial arts. The movements in judo are basic, and focus on being able to take down the opponent, rather than the showiness of karate or other martial arts.
  3. 3. Judo and Karate • Karate, especially at higher levels, involves the use of weapons. These include the bo staff and daggers. In contrast, judo does not use strikes but rather chokes, holds, and locking down the opponent’s joints. Judo focuses on tiring out the opponent and wearing them down, whereas karate try to battle the opponent into submission. Karate is considered a hard martial art with since hitting is a major component. Judo is a soft martial art since fighting is based around what the opponent does.
