 1856 First railway built in Sweden.
 Until beginning of 20th century combination
of private and public railways.
 After 1930 s, railways nationalised into SJ
(”Swedish Rail”).
 1988 SJ splits to Banverket (infrastructure)

WHERE Through central Göteborg
WHAT An approximately 8 kilometre long railway tunnel
underneath Göteborg.
WHY Contributes to an attractive, expanding and
sustainable West Sweden. Provide increased
capacity for train traffic, reduce vulnerability in the
railway system and three new stations will increase
accessibility to the city and the region.
NOW Project planning underway, start of construction
2018 at the earliest.

22. The Marieholm Connection Project
WHERE Göteborg
WHAT New road tunnel underneath and new railway bridge
over the Göta River in Göteborg.
WHY Reduce vulnerability and increase the robustness of
the road traffic and railway systems. Reduce the load
of traffic through the Tingstad Tunnel.
NOW Planning is underway, start of construction in 2014.
COST The estimated cost of the tunnel is SEK 3.5 Billion
and of the bridge SEK 1.35 billion, both in 2009 price
levels. The tunnel is included in the West Swedish
Agreement and the bridge is financed through
regional and national cooperation.
