2. MRI practice is evolving and RF shield design must evolve with it.
The accuracy and scope of MRI practice is rapidly increasing and the field has become increasingly
competitive. New practices are opening and established practices are expanding continually, but
at the same time, the demand for MRI scanning as a diagnostic tool is growing exponentially.
Advanced diagnostic techniques are routinely requested for an increasing number of procedures
and MRI scanning is now being integrated into the operating theatre environment. This places
more pressure on both privately owned and publically funded MRI facilities and many are working
double shifts to cope with the demand and reduce waiting lists for urgent and everyday scans.
Furthermore, in today's competitive MRI environment it has become critical for radiology
practices to achieve a return on investment as quickly as possible, but this can never be achieved
at the cost of patient and staff safety and image quality. So how can practice productivity be
enhanced?
By working closely with market leaders ETS Lindgren and our other international associates, and
studying current trends in cage design word wide, it is clear that MRI suite design plays an ever
increasing role in improving patient throughput rates as well as staff morale and occupational
health and safety, which are all critical components in the ability of public and private MRI
facilities to meet ever-growing demand.
ln short, MRI suite design is no longer just a matter of physical shielding, but also of human
psychology and workplace productivity. The requirement is to engineer a patient- and staff-
friendly environment within the exacting physical demands of MRI cage engineering, yet still
produce an efficient MRI suite at a realistic cost. This is the challenge we explore in this brochure.

5. The MRI suite is one of the most physically demanding environments in medical premises design,
since both the accuracy of the medical scans produced and the safety and comfort of patients and
staff depend on it.
The first and most basic need is to isolate the suite from external electromagnetic interference
that could affect the accuracy of the scans. This is achieved by lining the walls, floor and ceiling of
the suite entirely in a conducting metal, including the incorporation of an almost transparent
metal gauze into laminated safety glass panels for use in windows and doors.
For Faraday and virtually every other
leading cage shielding specialist world-
wide, there is only one metal for MRI
shielding, and that is copper, which has
the highest electrical conductivity of
any metal. Aluminium is prone to
oxidation which could threaten the
integrity of the shield and require costly
repairs. Steel is prone to corrosion
particularly if moisture ingress occurs.
All Faraday MRI cages are therefore fully
lined with copper.
To protect the operation of the
equipment attenuation levels up to
100dB are required over the frequency
range from 10MHz up to 400MHz. MRI is
also by far the noisiest procedure in any
radiology practice, and noise levels
must be addressed.
A combination of construction solutions
must be employed, such as the
incorporation of acoustic design
measures in the shell and the use of sound absorbing acoustic wall panels and ceiling tiles for all
surface finishes to control reverberation. In a well built MRI suite, little noise should be audible
outside the suite.
At Faraday our architects and engineers have developed well established designs to minimise
noise from MRIs.

completely enclosed in a copper faraday cage, the most reliable way to exclude external radio
interference which could affect the accuracy of MRI scan data. At the same time, each of these
state of the art suites is quite different as they are designed to meet the needs, specifications and,
of course, budgets of the practices and hospitals which commissioned them.

The AS-II RF-Shielded door offers
attractive hardware along with a laminate
finish or a wood veneer. The RF-Shielded
door provides 100 dB attenuation over
frequency ranges of up to 450 MHz and is
ideal for surgical MRI suites with its
automatic sealing operation.
The AS-II Acoustic door has been
designed and developed to deliver
exceptional STC ratings for sound
abatement. Louder gradients can be
annoying to rooms surrounding the MRI
suite. The specially developed
acoustical seal design, core material,
and overall weight aid in minimizing
sound transmission while providing
automatic RF sealing and minimal
opening and closing forces.

gaskets, bladders, and contact fingers,
and thus the service problems that are
associated with them. Such problems
include broken contact fingers, flattened
gaskets, and leaking bladders as
shown above.
Highly Reliable Sealing,
Easy-Open, Easy-Close Door
Traditional RF doors typically require
excessive force for opening and closing,
due to a friction RF seal design. Frictional
forces are eliminated in the Auto-Seal II,
resulting in a smooth, highly reliable,
easy-open, easy-close operation.
The door automatically seals when
pulled into the closed position. The
logic mechanism for both the open and
close operation is easily activated by the
door handle. The door operates on a
standard 240vac service and clean,
dry shop air at 690kPa or equivalent
international standards.
Designed for Safety
Safety is assured via such features as an
escape latch and lock mechanism, an
emergency “Open” button that can be
mounted per customers’ needs and a fail-
safe logic and controller system that fails in
the “Open” position in the event of power or
air pressure loss. By interfacing with the
logic system, additional safety features can
be added such as card readers, magnetic
locks, door closers and more.

20. Neuroscience Study Points to Unique Effects of
SkyCeiling Photographic Sky Compositions
November 1, 20L2 -Texas Tech University's Neuroimaging lnstitute has partnered with Sky
Factory to research the neural effects of Sky Factory's photographic sky compositions. The
results from the study surprised researchers and indicate that Sky Factory's photographic sky
compositions cause unique neural activations.
Several decades of evidence-based design research indicates access to nature or nature imagery
supports healing, reduces stress and anxiety, and reduces the use of pain medications in health
care settings. lllusions of nature manufactured by The Sky Factory - notably their Luminous
SkyCeilings have been installed in health care environments around the world to alleviate stress,
promote patient relaxation, provide positive distraction and improve the patient experience.
A two-part, blinded, research project, conducted by Texas Tech University, College of Human
Sciences’ researchers Drs. Debajyoti Pati, Michael O'Boyle and Cherif Amor, is investigating the
effects of Sky Factory's photographic sky com positions on brain activation and the effects of their
virtuaI skylights on hospital patients.
The first study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRl) to generate brain maps of
neural activation in healthy subjects when exposed to Sky Factory's SkyCeilings unique
photographic sky compositions and compared the brain patterns with those generated by
viewing other positive, negative or neutral images.
Initial analysis of the brain maps indicates that the photographic sky compositions shared all of
the characteristic neural activations of other positive images, while, additionally, activating several
other unique brain regions. Of particular interest to the researchers were the activations found in
the cerebellum.
"Brain activation of the cerebellum is often associated with aspects of spatial cognition, in
particular the experience of extended space, as well as imagined, or real, motion through that
space, said neuroscientist Dr. Michael O'Boyle. He continued, "By way of speculation, it may be
that viewing Sky Factory compositions evokes a sense of expansion into or through this extended
space.”
Dr. Debajyoti Pati said that, "The best expectation out of a relaxation-inducing positive distraction
feature is diversion of one's attention and consciousness from the immediate ailment and stressful
environment. Neural activations in response to the visual stimulus used in this study suggest that
cognitive diversions induced by photographic sky compositions may result in significantly
different and higher levels of positive physiological responses as compared to positive images in
general."
20
21. Neuroscience Study Points to Unique Effects of
SkyCeiling Photographic Sky Compositions
Sky Factory's founder, Bill Witherspoon, said, "of particular interest to us is the fact that the Sky
Factory sky compositions activate areas of the brain not activated by other positive images. lt is
the intention of Sky Factory artists to introduce compositional principles and elements into our
sky images that insure the necessary visual cues are present to trigger a profound 'relaxation
response' - the unique physiological state that corresponds to an expanded awareness and sense
of inner peace and stability.
We expect that additional research is likely to further link this experience of SkyCeilings to the
biophilic engagement that is reported by end-users.”

the budget you specify.
Faraday Pty Ltd are MRI suite design, testing and installation specialists. MRI cages are our key
product, so unlike general interior design or medical centre fit out companies, the design,
installation and testing of MRI suites is the main reason we exist.
We have built hundreds of MRI cages throughout Australia and New Zealand, in doing so; we have
gained a thorough understanding of the physical requirements of both public and private MRI
procedures. We also fully understand that the business case has to be made for every design
decision.
We may be inflexible in our belief that copper shielding provides the surest and most reliable
magnetic shield for MRI cages, but we are extremely flexible in our approach to MRI suite design
and our designers willingly accept the challenge to design an outstanding and productive MRI
environment on any budge.
We provide a full range of MRI shielding services including radio frequency shielding design,
manufacture, installation and testing.

26
27. Faraday copper shielding delivers superior protection
An ETS Lindgren sliding door is a useful option when space in the MRI room is at a premium.
27
Faraday’s superior technology is installed in a number of MRI suites worldwide. Faraday build in
MRI sound absorption by ensuring a 50 mm air space on the outside of the copper membrane and
lining the inside with a sound insulating fill before fixing the drywall internal acoustic panels or
tiles on the walls and ceiling.
MRI is also by far the noisiest procedure in any radiology practice, and noise levels must be
addressed. A combination of construction solutions must be employed, such as the incorporation
of acoustic design measures in the shell and the use of sound absorbing acoustic wall panels and
ceiling tiles for all surface finishes to control reverberation. In a well built MRI suite, the typical
banging noise should not be audible outside the suite.
In addition to our high standards of construction and materials specification, Faraday are exclusive
suppliers in Australia for ETS Lindgren pre-fabricated shielding components and accessories.
These include easy opening single shielded doors, double shielded doors to provide access for
hospital gurneys, and sliding shielded doors that save space in smaller MRI rooms. The ETS-
Lindgren range also includes shielded glass panels and windows and non-ferrous door handles.
28. Your patients are very important,
but so are your staff.
People work more productively in an attractive
and efficient environment.
28
29. The radiographer’s working environment.
29
This control room at the Lingard Private Hospital in NSW has restful colour scheme, a large
window for patient observation and double glass doors to reduce the impression of being in a
confined space.
The radiographer is the pivot of every radiology practice, because he or she is the interface
between the patient and the diagnostic radiologist.
The MRI procedure can be intimidating, uncomfortable and even frightening for many patients,
particularly for children and the elderly. The degree of difficulty and time required to complete a
scan successfully is very much dependent on the people management skills of the radiographer.
Thus the radiographer is a key factor in patient throughput rates, productivity and ultimately the
profitability of the practice. This is why it makes sense to make the radiographer's life less stressful.
One way of achieving this is to design a patient environment that is warm, welcoming and
relaxing, rather than clinical and intimidating. But what about the radiographer's own work
environment? It is important is to design the MRI control booth as a pleasant working
environment, with carefully chosen finishes and lighting, while natural light from outside is an
added plus where available. The MRI suite is a major operating cost and profit centre, so why not
invest a little more in the staff who influence its productivity?
The Auto-Seal™ door, exclusive to Faraday in Australia, uses push plate operated compressed air
to open and shut the door to the suite instead of leaving the staff to struggle with old fashioned
finger seals that have to be opened and closed by brute force up to a hundred times a shift.
An open and shut case for a better working environment.
30. Maximising returns in the MRI practice:
The Human Factor
It is important for the MRI suite to look and feel
different from other areas in the practice
30
31. See patient management in a new light
31
In a well designed MRI suite, walls in soft, restful shades, recessed LED lighting and a
backlit cloudscape on the ceiling or kiddie comforting designs like the Royal Children’s Hospital in
Melbourne (pictured previous page), combine to produce an environment which is non-
threatening and relaxing.
MRI may be the miracle diagnostic tool of 21st century medical practice, but for the patient the
process is often something of an ordeal. The confined space within the magnet, the
accompanying noise and the necessity to lie motionless while the scanning takes place is a
stressful combination, even if the patient has had an MRI before.
A frightened and therefore
uncooperative patient will be very
likely to cause delays that impact on
patient throughput rates and,
ultimately, return on the investment.
There are, however, design solutions
that can result in a calmer and more
relaxed patient environment and
these range from the elimination of
harsh clinical lighting and effective
noise control to the provision of
distractions designed to relieve
patient anxiety during the scan.
See patient management in a new light: By replacing harsh clinical lighting with soft LED down
light and defining the patient area with a parameter light strip, the mood becomes much calmer.
Supermarket owners, department stores and restaurants have known it for years: You can change
the customer's emotional mood by changing the light levels. The same applies to MRI suites.
When harsh Clinical lighting is replaced by softer, more relaxed illumination that provides a
gentle, soothing light, the patient enters a calm, more re-assuring environment which can be
made more visually interesting by the use of colour. It all makes sense from a point of view of cost
control as well, since modern LED lighting designed for MRI suites is not only non-ferrous and
magnetically neutral, it also consumes five times less electricity than a conventional incandescent
lamp and has a lifetime of 50,000 hours, reducing maintenance to a minimum.

It is important for the MRI suite to look and feel different from other areas in the practice, as it
needs to work harder to relax the patient and ensure a minimum of repeat scans and lost time
resulting from patient stress. Many practices choose to finish the interior walls and ceilings with a
carefully chosen, relaxing and harmonious colour scheme, and our designers are always happy to
work with you to achieve your own signature look.
For those clients who wish to go a step further and create a state of the art visual statement for
