2. Production
• Production is when a film is actually being made,
it includes the acting, filming and making of the
film
• A lot of planning is needed pre-production, as the
scenes need to be created, the costumes and
props need to be in place and produced, the
actors and locations need to be selected and the
storyboard needs to be created in order for the
production process to be successful
3. Distribution
• There are several methods of distribution available, from
small scale films using social network sites, YouTube and
possibly a small amount of some form of advertisement like
posters. However, high profile films will have a lot more
successful techniques, and a wider array to attract more
attention. They would have their trailer frequently shown
on TV and during shows with higher ratings to achieve a
wider audience seeing it. They would also have bill boards
with the film posters and will also have it mentioned on
radio. They will have posters on buses and other forms of
public transport, and the actors will also promote it in any
interviews they do, and it will also be shown in the cinema
before the showing of another popular film, possibly of a
similar genre. As well as using more traditional means with
adverts in magazines and newspapers, as well as the
methods used by small scale productions
4. Distribution
• The outcome is that the film advertisements are seen by a
large number of people, who would then talk about it to
others so more people would be aware, who then go to see
it at the cinema or buy it on DVD, therefore getting a large
profit for the film company and ensures that it is a
successful film as it’s very well known
• The advantages of using digital technology to distribute a
film is that it can get a wider audience’s attention as it can
be seen all over the world. It also means that it can be
shared from person to person so a larger amount of people
can then see it. It also allows it to be seen quickly and
conveniently and will result in a lot of people talking about
it, and therefore result in more people viewing it, so the
film can become successful
5. Exhibition
• The next stage for a film would be for it to be
shown in selected cinemas nationwide and
even worldwide. Certain cinemas may be
selected; the larger ones who attract more
people to them, or just to a few in major cities
so that the film can be seen by a great deal of
people. Certain cinemas may not be selected
if they are in remote locations with only a few
viewers if they do not attract large audiences
6. Evaluation
1. What are the benefits of new media technologies?
There are many advantages of new media
technologies, but the primary one is that it allows a
large amount of people to view something in a short
amount of time. It allows a vast amount of people to
spread news, for example if people tell their friends
and family about a film, who tell their friends and
family about that film; then the news has reached a
vast amount of people without the distributor doing
anything, which in turn is a huge advantage for them.
7. 2. Comment on the digital distribution and marketing of a
film campaign.
The digital distribution and marketing of a film
campaign is done after advertising. Dependant on how
successful a film is predicted to be, this will help to
determine how to go about campaigning and
distributing the film. For example, if there is a high
budget film, with big Hollywood actors, then this film is
more likely to make a large profit. This will determine
how much money goes into the campaign to promote
the film and in what and how many cinemas this film
will be shown. If there are not a lot of funds available
to do this then the film will not make a large profit as
there will not be an effective campaign and the film
will not be promoted well and will not be very well
known
8. 3. What impacts affect the success of a film?
- The amount of money put into advertising
and distribution
- the type of distribution and advertising used
to promote the film
- The time of year that it is released
- July being the best, September being the
worst
9. 4. How do British films compete in the market against American
films and distribution companies?
British films generally don’t have as much money as American
films do in terms of production and distribution, unless they
are merged with an American company. There is also a limit to
what they can do, as American companies own a great deal
and have a lot of power, it is easy for them to prevent a trailer
being shown in a certain place for example.
British films are often less known as they may spend the
majority of their funds on the actors and production, rather
then on the distribution. British films are often seen as not as
good as American films by audiences, which also helps
contribute to them not being as successful, as a lot of people
do not wish to see them.
