If everyone replaced their conventional
holiday light strings with LEDs, at least
two billion kilowatt-hours of electricity
could be saved in a month1

4. Decorating
• Use Solar or Energy Efficient LED lighting
• Set lighting on timers to shut off after bedtime
• Reuse last years decorations
• Use candles, plants, fresh fruits and vegetables
• Buy an artificial tree or a living tree that can be
replanted

• Carry reusable bags
• Buy and eat locally grown food
• Make your meal organic
• Shop less – Buy fewer things

The 2.6 billion holiday cards sold
each year in the United States
could fill a landfill the size of a

• Celebrate at or close to home - Invite
neighbors to join you

• Wash in buckets/bowl
• Use Green cleaning supplies

• Use cloth napkins
• Wash dishes in the dishwasher
• Reduce the use of disposable plates/utensils
• Keep your thermostat down
• Use reusable containers for leftovers

Between Thanksgiving and New Year's day,
Americans throw away a million extra
tons of garbage each week, including
holiday wrapping and packaging
If every family reused just 2 feet of ribbon,
the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could
tie a bow around the entire planet

• Wrap gifts with reusable gift bag or holiday
cloth instead of paper
• Give gift cards
• Gift a community service or donation
• Reduce clutter - Offer assistance

compost bin - the compost will enrich the soil
