It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that
support nonprofit organizations.

17. Case Study:
In 2013, the Michael J. Fox Foundation took
on the #UNselfie by asking their followers to post
images of themselves showing the reason why
they support Parkinson’s Disease research.
Thousands of people around the world uploaded
#Unselfies - or selfless selfies - that featured
images of family members or short notes in
honor of a loved one suffering from Parkinson’s.
It was a highly visual campaign and helped raise
support not just for the Foundation, but for the
many people who face the disease every day.
18. Case Study:
Big Brothers Big Sisters of America created a
dedicated #GivingTuesday hashtag, #bbstues,
and held events at their chapters around the
country for bigs and their sibs to get together
and talk about giving. They celebrated each
chapter's volunteer and service moments, and
used the “Big” #GivingTuesday hashtag to raise
awareness for their community and programs on
a national level. Individual chapters also lead
their own fundraising and service campaigns to
compliment the national conversation.
19. Case Study:
Hands On Nashville is a small
non-profit that collects old and
used bikes, fixes them, and
donates the bikes to charity.
On #GivingTuesday, the
organization held a city-wide
bike drive that collected over
115 donated bikes, which staff
will repair and give to kids in
the spring as part of their
RECYCLE program.
20. Case Study:
Community Missions in
Niagara, NY, collaborated with
Lauren Rose Miller and Rellim
Hair Studio to offer free
haircuts to those staying at the
local Emergency Housing
Shelter. Guests received
haircuts while employees from
a local Target store painted
and updated the Shelter’s
three-room common area.
21. Case Study:
The Charmery local
ice cream shop in
Baltimore, MD, created
a custom flavor for
#GivingTuesday and
donated all proceeds
to support the City’s
#BMoreGivesMore
campaign.
22. So…. what do you do now?
1. Decide on your #GivingTuesday focus,
project, event, outreach, or call to action.
2. Establish a desired goal or outcome.
3. Detail a timeline and a strategy.
4. Refer to available resources.
5. And then… go for it!
23. Tips:
• Don’t wait until the last minute… and don’t try to
recreate the wheel. Try something simple and
ramp it up to full throttle next year. Be smart.
• Social media is key to making sure that the
#GivingTuesday message grows and it’s also one
of the best ways to share your organization’s story,
mission, and values.
• Explore the idea of an innovative partnership or
collaboration – one that may not be part of your
day-to-day operations – and see what takes root. It
may be the start of something great.
24. • Complete the form on the PNLC website to
indicate your interest in participating in
#GivingTuesday… and we’ll keep you in the loop
and provide the resources and tools you need.
• Look at PNLC upcoming workshops and fall
programming … is there something we are offering
that you may need? Register early.
• Look for #GivingTuesday Meetups and Idea
Exchanges. We’re all in this together and we all
benefit from this movement… share what’s
working/not working with your nonprofit peers.
