Executive summary
Indus University is a private sector university located at one of the prime locations
in the city of Karachi and it is situated adjacent to a famous cricket ground,
National Stadium, Karachi. Initially, it was established as the Indus Institute of
Higher Education (IIHE) through a Legislative Act of Sindh Assembly on 28th
November 2005 and assented by the Governor of Sindh on 07th January, 2006 by
PNBMDC Foundation with an aim to strengthen and improve our country’s role of
providing quality education and services which not only would enhance student’s
caliber as individual but will improve the scenario of education as a whole.
Indus University is also recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC)
and placed in five stars category by the Charter Inspection and Evaluation
Committee (CIEC) of the Government of Sindh.
In 2016 Indus university opened new branch near II swords in Karachi .As it is
new branch so that my teacher gave me the project to research on the topic
“Impact of extracurricular activities on Indus University”, this research is only
for the Clifton campus and all the date has only been collected from the students of
Indus University in the form of questionnaires and interviews.
Our report comprises different topics of research which are as follows ; aims and
objectives of the report ,literature review, research background , research plan,
research methodology, importance of the research ,data findings and analyzation,
limitations of the research ,conclusion, recommendations ,references and appendix.
After collecting all the data I have arrived on the conclusion that extracurricular
activities have positive impact on Indus university but there are some weaknesses
as well which if not being dealt properly on time by the management of Indus
university can easily demotivate students which will definitely impact on the
university as a whole.

Chapter 1
1.Introduction
This report looks into the factors of extracurricular activities that impact the Indus
university and suggest ways to promote positive impact on university
Definitions:
Rubin, Bommer, and Baldwin (2002) state, “One intuitive notion is that
extracurricular activities are a place where students look to utilize, and
perhaps refine and develop, their interpersonalskills.”(p. 443)
Some researchers describe extracurricular activities through the use of synonyms,
such as “non-academic endeavors”(Chia, 2005, p. 76) or “out-of-class
experiences”(Nelson et al. 2002, p. 278).
Barnett (2007) notes that “…schools encourage students to participate in
various extracurricular activities, such as athletics, vocationalclubs, student
government, newspapers and yearbooks,and specialinterestgroups” (p. 316).
2.Aims and objectives
 To summarize findings through questionnaires and interviews taken from the
students related to extracurricular activities
 To draw conclusion on the basis of findings
 To give recommendations on the basis of findings and our knowledge to
help management focus on grey areas to implement better strategies in order
to motivate students and maintain positive reputation of Indus university

3. Literature review
3.1BENEFITSOF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES (DALEY &
LEAHY,2003):
One study in particular discussed how being involved in physical extracurricular
activities that may actually improve self-perceptions. It is important to understand
that participation in extracurricular physical activities may influence the mental
well-being of young people by reducing stress, keeping fit and feeling overall
better about their appearances (Daley & Leahy, 2003). Thosewho were involved
in these activities reported significantly higher self-perceptions compared to those
who did not participate. Daley and Leahy (2003) did a study involving 126
randomly selected children who were 8 or 9 years old, who participated in physical
extracurricular activities.
All of these participants were involved in some form of physical extracurricular
activity organized by the schoolat least once per week either during lunchtime or
after schoolhours. The second group consisted of 63 additional children who did
not participate in physical activities. Thosewho had regular physical activity
perceived themselves in a positive manner. What the researchers found was a
positive association between participation in various forms of physical activity and
positive self-perception (Daley & Leahy, 2003).
It might also be suggested that participation can give adolescents confidence about
their physical and perhaps social selves. Another important part of an adolescent's
identity is social competence, and many report that socialization and friendships
are important in their lives. When adolescents are in extracurricular activities, they
often have greater opportunity to interact with others, develop friendships, and to
develop social confidence. Also, participation might be interpreted as a sign of
maturity and as a self-affirming behavior.
The research showed that those who participated seemed to have 12 a developed
sense of commitment and obligation. In conclusion, it was shown that those who
participated in extracurricular physical activities had a higher self-perception than
those who were not participants (Daley & Leahy, 2003)
3.2PRAGMATISM ( JOHN DEWEY)
INTRODUCTION:
The man who introduced Pragmatism in Education is John Dewey. According to
him, the real value of a thing lies in its utility for human development and welfare.
Thus even education is useless if it does not promote human welfare and so the
system of education should be changed so that it becomes both desirable and
beneficial. Education should provide real life experiences to the learners so as to
make them dynamic, resourceful efficient and enterprising.
PRAGMATIC AIMS OF EDUCATION:
The aim for education is to teach children to be comfortable in their learning
environment to an extent that children are living their life. Dewey believed in this
type of environment that is not considered a preparation for life, but life itself. He
believed that educators should know the ideas and materials that motivate and
interest children and plan accordingly. Dewey believed that aims should grow out
of existing conditions, be tentative, and have an end view. In Democracy and
education, he wrote that education is “that reconstruction or reorganization of
experience which adds to the meaning of experience, and which increases ability to
direct the courseof subsequent experience” (Agarwal et al, 2010). The aim
that might be derived from the foregoing definition of education would include
thehelping of the child to develop in such a way as to contribute to his
continued growth (Agarwal et al, 2010).
Some of the aims of education outlined by John Dewey (as cited in Khalid, 2005)
are:
Education must develop the power of effective experiencing. The pupil must be
enabled to copewith the indeterminacies of life.
Even the specific objectives should be focused, clear, concrete, practicable and
oriented towards human welfare.
Natural development should be taken to notice. This refers to the development of
bodily organs and the maintenance of health and vigor. It also includes the
development of physical skills that would be useful in games and play and other
such activities. Individual differences should also be entertained during this
training.
Social efficiency is another aim of education. Its function is to habituate an
individual to social control, to develop a willingness to subordinate his natural
urges to social desires.
PRAGMATISM AND THE SCHOOL:
The schoolserves as both, part of an environment as well as a man made
environment which works to provide the best possible learning experiences to the
students and that is why John Dewey calls a schoolas “Miniature society” and
assets that “schools should be the true representatives of the society” (Singh, 200,
p.187) where students experience all the activities in accordancewith their
interests, aptitudes and capacities (Singh, 2007).
3.3FIVE CS OF POSITIVE ATTRIBUTES FOR YOUTH ,
MORRISSEY(2005)
Morrissey (2005) describes positive youth development as encompassing five
constructs:(1) competence in academic, social, and vocational areas; (2)
confidence; (3) connection to family, community, and peers; (4) character; and (5)
caring and compassion(cited in Roth, 2000). These are also known as the Five Cs
of positive attributes for youth.
By engaging in extracurricular activities, students may be required to maintain
good grades in order to meet eligibility to participate in sports or cheerleading.
Eligibility may motivate students to do their bestacademically in order to
participate in the activity.
Competing in a speechcontest, may help a student gain confidence, and being
involved in a youth group or scouting organization may help the student develop
character and connectwith the community. Finally, community service or
volunteering might help a student project a caring and compassionattitude toward
others. It is 5 important to understand exactly how each activity is impacting a
student and what type of positive development is taking place.

4.Structure of the research
4.1 IMPORTANCE OF THE RESEARCH:
This research is very important because the goal of this research is to gather
findings and draw conclusion to show in front of the management of Indus
university and provide recommendations to curtail internal weaknesses
4.2 ETHICAL ISSUES:
During the collection of data via questionnaires and interviews I have faced ethical
issues as a lot of students and teachers were reluctant to give their views and I
couldn’t force them to give as it is their personal choice
4.3 SUMMARY:
Chap 1:
It comprises of definitions of the topic ,aims and objectives of the research to better
understand the problem of the research.
Chap 2:
It comprises of theories of different writers to evaluate the complexity of the
problem and get some knowledge from their research to draw conclusion
accurately
Chap3:
It gives details about the research such as how important this research is for the
university, ethical issues faced by the researcher and summary of all the chapters.
It also indicates that this is causal research and duration of the research is two
months.
Chap4:
It reflects all the data collected from the respondents and findings of data collected
by the students and university on which conclusion and recommendations will be
based on.
Chap5:
Finally this chapter serves the purposeon which all above chapters were prepared.
In this chapter conclusion will be drawn which is positive after collecting,
summarizing and analyzing all the data gathered from the students.
5.Research background
For the purpose of this research I used several ways to get knowledge of the topic,
such as;

 Magazines
 Interviews etc
For this research I used following sample:
Target population youngsters and adults below the age of
40
Sampling frame Students of Indus university(Clifton)
Actual sample 100 respondents

CAUSAL RESEARCH:
Causal Research explores the effect of one thing on another and more specifically,
the effect of one variable on another.
The research is used to measure what impact a specific change will have on
existing norms and allows market researchers to predict hypothetical scenarios
upon which a company can base its business plan.

This research took two months to complete all the tasks with a lot of efforts during
the class timings and after the classes.

 Through questionnaires I found out that 47% of the students have
participated in extracurricular activities
 66% of the students like outdooractivities and only 34% students like indoor
extracurricular activities
 63% of the students like evening time to participate and only 37% like
daytime
 Out of many options written in questionnaire students prefer sports and
picnic the most which are 61% and 52%
 60% of the students strongly agree to the question that extracurricular
activities are good for physical health and , 31% agree , 9% are neutral and
0% disagree and strongly disagree
33% of the students strongly agree to the question that extracurricular
activities are good for better academic performance and , 49% agree , 14%
are neutral, 4% disagree and 0% strongly disagree
 35% of the students strongly agree to the question that extracurricular
activities are responsible for personal grooming , 46% agree , 12% are
neutral, 5% disagree and 2% strongly disagree
 54% of the students strongly agree to the question that extracurricular
activities booststudents’ confidence , 38% agree , 4% are neutral and
disagree and 0% strongly disagree
 4% of the students strongly agree to the question that extracurricular
activities have negative impact on students and university , 11% agree ,
29% are neutral and 44% disagree and 12% strongly disagree
 39% of the students strongly agree to the question that Indus University
should arrange more extracurricular activities, 37% agree , 14% are neutral,
7% disagree and 3% strongly disagree

10.CONCLUSION
According to questionnaires filled by students I can conclude that most of the
students think that extracurricular activities have positive impact on students and
Indus University.
Students think that extracurricular activities are good for physical health, better
academic performance, students’ personal grooming and booststudents
confidence.76% students wants more extracurricular activities in Indus university.
Moreover most of the students prefer sports and picnic among all the activities.
11.Recommendations
On the basis of findings and conclusion I would recommend that;
 Information about events and activities such as: dinner and picnics etc
should be publicize on a large scale to ensure that information has reached to
all the students of Indus University.
 There should be more extracurricular activities in future
 Management should frequently ask from students their advices and their
feedbacks
 There should be activities according to the weaknesses of students to
overcome their weaknesses
 There should be more outdoorand evening time extracurricular activities
 Management should focus more on sports and picnics.
12.Limitations
 There was a language barrier, many students whose English is not good
found difficulty in understanding questions
 Due to Ramadan many students were absent
 Students were not enthusiastic to fill questionnaires due to fasting
 Students were reluctant to give their opinions not to exposetheir identities

Miss Adeela: Extracurricular activities develop sportsman spirit the way that they

university? And do you think there are any negative impacts of extracurricular
activities on Indus University?
Salman: I guess Indus university arrange such events but they are not upto mark ,
students don’tget information about such events like I am from MBA weekend
program I get information very late so that it should be on wide scale.
Second if I talk about negativity I don’tthink there is any negative impact of
extracurricular activities although I think there should be more extracurricular
activities because the more students get involved the more their learning power
will enhance.

Researcher:what other activities would you like to experience in future except

Fahmida Bhatti: I would like to experience events such as, Eid Milan party after
exams and I think it would be a good idea to have Iftar party during Ramadan
except these there should be indoor games for girls to motivate girls, presentations,
competitions and there should be activities according to students’ weaknesses such
as presentations skills.

  • 3. Indus University is a private sector university located at one of the prime locations in the city of Karachi and it is situated adjacent to a famous cricket ground, National Stadium, Karachi. Initially, it was established as the Indus Institute of Higher Education (IIHE) through a Legislative Act of Sindh Assembly on 28th November 2005 and assented by the Governor of Sindh on 07th January, 2006 by PNBMDC Foundation with an aim to strengthen and improve our country’s role of providing quality education and services which not only would enhance student’s caliber as individual but will improve the scenario of education as a whole. Indus University is also recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and placed in five stars category by the Charter Inspection and Evaluation Committee (CIEC) of the Government of Sindh. In 2016 Indus university opened new branch near II swords in Karachi .As it is new branch so that my teacher gave me the project to research on the topic “Impact of extracurricular activities on Indus University”, this research is only for the Clifton campus and all the date has only been collected from the students of Indus University in the form of questionnaires and interviews. Our report comprises different topics of research which are as follows ; aims and objectives of the report ,literature review, research background , research plan, research methodology, importance of the research ,data findings and analyzation, limitations of the research ,conclusion, recommendations ,references and appendix. After collecting all the data I have arrived on the conclusion that extracurricular activities have positive impact on Indus university but there are some weaknesses as well which if not being dealt properly on time by the management of Indus university can easily demotivate students which will definitely impact on the university as a whole.   • 5. 1.Introduction This report looks into the factors of extracurricular activities that impact the Indus university and suggest ways to promote positive impact on university Definitions: Rubin, Bommer, and Baldwin (2002) state, “One intuitive notion is that extracurricular activities are a place where students look to utilize, and perhaps refine and develop, their interpersonalskills.”(p. 443) Some researchers describe extracurricular activities through the use of synonyms, such as “non-academic endeavors”(Chia, 2005, p. 76) or “out-of-class experiences”(Nelson et al. 2002, p. 278). Barnett (2007) notes that “…schools encourage students to participate in various extracurricular activities, such as athletics, vocationalclubs, student government, newspapers and yearbooks,and specialinterestgroups” (p. 316). 2.Aims and objectives  To summarize findings through questionnaires and interviews taken from the students related to extracurricular activities  To draw conclusion on the basis of findings  To give recommendations on the basis of findings and our knowledge to help management focus on grey areas to implement better strategies in order to motivate students and maintain positive reputation of Indus university Chap 2

Literature review 3.1BENEFITSOF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES (DALEY & LEAHY,2003): One study in particular discussed how being involved in physical extracurricular activities that may actually improve self-perceptions. It is important to understand that participation in extracurricular physical activities may influence the mental well-being of young people by reducing stress, keeping fit and feeling overall better about their appearances (Daley & Leahy, 2003). Thosewho were involved in these activities reported significantly higher self-perceptions compared to those who did not participate. Daley and Leahy (2003) did a study involving 126 randomly selected children who were 8 or 9 years old, who participated in physical extracurricular activities. All of these participants were involved in some form of physical extracurricular activity organized by the schoolat least once per week either during lunchtime or after schoolhours. The second group consisted of 63 additional children who did not participate in physical activities. Thosewho had regular physical activity perceived themselves in a positive manner. What the researchers found was a positive association between participation in various forms of physical activity and positive self-perception (Daley & Leahy, 2003). It might also be suggested that participation can give adolescents confidence about their physical and perhaps social selves. Another important part of an adolescent's identity is social competence, and many report that socialization and friendships are important in their lives. When adolescents are in extracurricular activities, they often have greater opportunity to interact with others, develop friendships, and to develop social confidence. Also, participation might be interpreted as a sign of maturity and as a self-affirming behavior. The research showed that those who participated seemed to have 12 a developed sense of commitment and obligation. In conclusion, it was shown that those who participated in extracurricular physical activities had a higher self-perception than those who were not participants (Daley & Leahy, 2003) 3.2PRAGMATISM ( JOHN DEWEY)
  • 7. INTRODUCTION: The man who introduced Pragmatism in Education is John Dewey. According to him, the real value of a thing lies in its utility for human development and welfare. Thus even education is useless if it does not promote human welfare and so the system of education should be changed so that it becomes both desirable and beneficial. Education should provide real life experiences to the learners so as to make them dynamic, resourceful efficient and enterprising. PRAGMATIC AIMS OF EDUCATION: The aim for education is to teach children to be comfortable in their learning environment to an extent that children are living their life. Dewey believed in this type of environment that is not considered a preparation for life, but life itself. He believed that educators should know the ideas and materials that motivate and interest children and plan accordingly. Dewey believed that aims should grow out of existing conditions, be tentative, and have an end view. In Democracy and education, he wrote that education is “that reconstruction or reorganization of experience which adds to the meaning of experience, and which increases ability to direct the courseof subsequent experience” (Agarwal et al, 2010). The aim that might be derived from the foregoing definition of education would include thehelping of the child to develop in such a way as to contribute to his continued growth (Agarwal et al, 2010). Some of the aims of education outlined by John Dewey (as cited in Khalid, 2005) are: Education must develop the power of effective experiencing. The pupil must be enabled to copewith the indeterminacies of life. Even the specific objectives should be focused, clear, concrete, practicable and oriented towards human welfare. Natural development should be taken to notice. This refers to the development of bodily organs and the maintenance of health and vigor. It also includes the development of physical skills that would be useful in games and play and other such activities. Individual differences should also be entertained during this training.
  • 8. Social efficiency is another aim of education. Its function is to habituate an individual to social control, to develop a willingness to subordinate his natural urges to social desires. PRAGMATISM AND THE SCHOOL: The schoolserves as both, part of an environment as well as a man made environment which works to provide the best possible learning experiences to the students and that is why John Dewey calls a schoolas “Miniature society” and assets that “schools should be the true representatives of the society” (Singh, 200, p.187) where students experience all the activities in accordancewith their interests, aptitudes and capacities (Singh, 2007). 3.3FIVE CS OF POSITIVE ATTRIBUTES FOR YOUTH , MORRISSEY(2005) Morrissey (2005) describes positive youth development as encompassing five constructs:(1) competence in academic, social, and vocational areas; (2) confidence; (3) connection to family, community, and peers; (4) character; and (5) caring and compassion(cited in Roth, 2000). These are also known as the Five Cs of positive attributes for youth. By engaging in extracurricular activities, students may be required to maintain good grades in order to meet eligibility to participate in sports or cheerleading. Eligibility may motivate students to do their bestacademically in order to participate in the activity. Competing in a speechcontest, may help a student gain confidence, and being involved in a youth group or scouting organization may help the student develop character and connectwith the community. Finally, community service or volunteering might help a student project a caring and compassionattitude toward others. It is 5 important to understand exactly how each activity is impacting a student and what type of positive development is taking place. Chap 3
  • 9. 4.Structure of the research 4.1 IMPORTANCE OF THE RESEARCH: This research is very important because the goal of this research is to gather findings and draw conclusion to show in front of the management of Indus university and provide recommendations to curtail internal weaknesses 4.2 ETHICAL ISSUES: During the collection of data via questionnaires and interviews I have faced ethical issues as a lot of students and teachers were reluctant to give their views and I couldn’t force them to give as it is their personal choice 4.3 SUMMARY: Chap 1: It comprises of definitions of the topic ,aims and objectives of the research to better understand the problem of the research. Chap 2: It comprises of theories of different writers to evaluate the complexity of the problem and get some knowledge from their research to draw conclusion accurately Chap3: It gives details about the research such as how important this research is for the university, ethical issues faced by the researcher and summary of all the chapters. It also indicates that this is causal research and duration of the research is two months. Chap4: It reflects all the data collected from the respondents and findings of data collected by the students and university on which conclusion and recommendations will be based on. Chap5:

  • 11. This research took two months to complete all the tasks with a lot of efforts during the class timings and after the classes. Chap 4 8.Data collection  Through questionnaires I found out that 47% of the students have participated in extracurricular activities  66% of the students like outdooractivities and only 34% students like indoor extracurricular activities  63% of the students like evening time to participate and only 37% like daytime  Out of many options written in questionnaire students prefer sports and picnic the most which are 61% and 52%  60% of the students strongly agree to the question that extracurricular activities are good for physical health and , 31% agree , 9% are neutral and 0% disagree and strongly disagree 33% of the students strongly agree to the question that extracurricular activities are good for better academic performance and , 49% agree , 14% are neutral, 4% disagree and 0% strongly disagree  35% of the students strongly agree to the question that extracurricular activities are responsible for personal grooming , 46% agree , 12% are neutral, 5% disagree and 2% strongly disagree  54% of the students strongly agree to the question that extracurricular activities booststudents’ confidence , 38% agree , 4% are neutral and disagree and 0% strongly disagree  4% of the students strongly agree to the question that extracurricular activities have negative impact on students and university , 11% agree , 29% are neutral and 44% disagree and 12% strongly disagree  39% of the students strongly agree to the question that Indus University should arrange more extracurricular activities, 37% agree , 14% are neutral, 7% disagree and 3% strongly disagree 9.Findings and analysis

Chap 5 10.CONCLUSION According to questionnaires filled by students I can conclude that most of the students think that extracurricular activities have positive impact on students and Indus University. Students think that extracurricular activities are good for physical health, better academic performance, students’ personal grooming and booststudents confidence.76% students wants more extracurricular activities in Indus university. Moreover most of the students prefer sports and picnic among all the activities. 11.Recommendations On the basis of findings and conclusion I would recommend that;  Information about events and activities such as: dinner and picnics etc should be publicize on a large scale to ensure that information has reached to all the students of Indus University.  There should be more extracurricular activities in future  Management should frequently ask from students their advices and their feedbacks  There should be activities according to the weaknesses of students to overcome their weaknesses  There should be more outdoorand evening time extracurricular activities  Management should focus more on sports and picnics. 12.Limitations
