- Este método teve início nas estradas de ferro de várias partes do
mundo para detectar trincas ou descontinuidades nas peças, que
passavam desapercebidas na exame visual.
- Foi então desenvolvido um método especial não destrutivo para
detectar rachaduras em peças de vagões e locomotivas, chamado
de método do óleo e giz que deu origem ao ensaio por líquido
penetrante.

- Inspeção por Líquidos Penetrantes:
- Consiste em detectar descontinuidades superficiais abertas na
superfície, tais como trincas, poros entre outros, de materiais
sólidos e não porosos ou com superfície grosseira usando líquido
penetrante .
- Princípios Básicos
- Líquido + Revelador.

- Procedimento:
- 1 Limpeza da peça;
- 2 Aplicar removedor;
- 3 Secar a superfície;
- 4 Aplicar líquido penetrante;
- 5 Lavar com água corrente;
- 6 Secar a superfície;
- 7 Aplicar revelador;
- 8 Análise visual.

- Vantagens:
- Detecção de descontinuidades imperceptíveis a olho nú;
- Não existe inconveniente quanto ao formato da peça;
- Exame rápido;
- Fácil execução;
- Baixo custo;
- Aplicável em materiais magnéticos e não magnéticos;
- Para o treinamento de operadores / inspetores se requer menos
tempo.

- Desvantagens:
- Detecta somente descontinuidades superficiais e que não estejam
obstruídas;
- O resíduo que permanecer na descontinuidade pode ser
prejudicial à solda ou material em alguns casos;
- Não aplicável em materiais porosos;
- Não apresenta resultados satisfatórios em temperaturas inferiores
a 10 ºC e superior a 60 ºC
