  1. 1. Re-cap Loren Lee’s (1984) five stages in the ending of relationships -‘DENRT’. In the box next to each of the images, write which stage you think the couple are in and why: COUPLE 1: COUPLE 2:
  2. 2. COUPLE 3: COUPLE 4:
  3. 3. COUPLE 5: COUPLE 6: COUPLE 7:
  4. 4. COUPLE 8:
  5. 5. ANSWERS (teachers only!): Couple 1. Most likely in the ‘E’ (exposure) stage as this woman looks like she is sharing her dissatisfaction with her partner, and making him aware of the problems from her perspective. Couple 2. Most likely in the ‘D’ (dissatisfaction) stage as it looks as though this woman is dissatisfied with the relationship however at this stage, he doesn’t seem to be aware of her dissatisfaction. Couple 3. Could be either ‘N’ (negotiation) stage or ‘R’ (resolution) stage. Accept both stages as correct as hard to tell whether they are discussing the problems raised in the ‘E’ (exposure) stage or they are trying to find a solution to the problems discussed in the ‘N’ (negotiation) stage. Couple 4. What couple?! That relationship is over! ‘T’ (termination) stage. Couple 5: This woman looks like she has confided in her friend about how dissatisfied she is with her current relationship. She is therefore in the ‘E’ (exposure) stage as she has ‘aired’ her dissatisfaction with her friend. Couple 6: This couple appear to be in couples therapy. They are therefore likely to be in the ‘R’ (resolution) stage where they are trying to find a solution to the problems discussed in the ‘N’ (negotiation) stage. Couple 7: Another easy one! They are in the ‘T’ (termination) stage - their relationship has ended so they are fighting over who should have the laptop. Couple 8: Could be either ‘N’ (negotiation) stage or ‘R’ (resolution) stage. Accept both stages as correct as hard to tell whether they are discussing the problems raised in the ‘E’ (exposure) stage or they are trying to find a solution to the problems discussed in the ‘N’ (negotiation) stage.
