2. Good news is that everyone can stay safe by being
aware and taking a few simple precautions.
1. Three points of contact - at all times

3. The first rule that ALL workers should
follow at ALL times is the maintenance
of three points of contact. This means
that, when climbing aboard, three
limbs should be touching a surface at
all times - either two hands and one
foot or two feet and one hand.

4. Before climbing aboard, an operator should
inspect handrails, steps and ladders. First
up, it's important to look out for debris,
liquids, ice, oil and any other materials that
might cause slippage.

5. When climbing vertical ladders, workers should face
towards the machine and make sure that both hands
are in use at all times. This means no carrying of bits
and pieces - and certainly no making phone calls.

6. Heavy earth moving equipment should
always be parked in a place where
there's enough room for the operator
to dismount onto a clear, flat surface.
It's surprising how many injuries are
caused by landing on uneven ground.
