  8. 8. Emphasis on Home Security “A home is only as secure as its weakest point”
  9. 9. SAFES 4 Don’t tell anyone you have a safe! 4 Safes should not be visible from windows 4 Anchor the safe to the floor (preferably in basement)
  10. 10. GARAGES 4 Do not keep valuables in garage 4 Install a motion sensor light near the garage door (main and side doors) 4 Lock inside house entry door and be mindful of vehicle pin pad 4 apply film or bars to any window in garage

  12. 12. What thieves are looking for  Loose change  Global positioning system  Air bags  Any other small items of value
  13. 13. ALARMS Alarms should be considered as a secondary measure of crime prevention. They should be used to complement good physical security techniques. 4Buy a good quality alarm system and make sure it is installed by a professional 4Know the exit and entry delay of the system 4Make sure alarm is audible and wires are underground
  14. 14. LIGHTING Good lighting is one of the easiest, cheapest and most effective measures to avoid break and enters after dark: 4 Find an appropriate place to mount lights (ie out of reach so criminals can’t unscrew the bulbs) 4 Keep your house well lit after dark. 4 Exterior lights for the front and side should remain on all night. 4 Motion detector lights are useful for the rear of your home.
  15. 15. LANDSCAPING (CPTED) 4 Trim trees and shrubs that can conceal or shadow doors and windows. 4 Keep landscaping open and short enough to offer no hiding places. 4 Choose shrubs that will mature at heights below the windows and choose thorny plants that will discourage prowling..
