II. REPORT SYNOPSIS
FOREWORD
Biological Implants – A Revolutionary Human Repair Technique
Biological Implants are testimony to the huge advancements in medical science. The development of
different types of implantable biomaterials according to the specified strength characteristics, conservation
of significant biochemical properties, the lower immunogenity and higher inductivity of regenerative
processes enables to carry out appropriate studies on the biochemical reactions following the implantation
of biomaterials. This illustrates the peculiarities of the regeneration processes of various types of
bioimplant materials during the application.
These implants are predicted to enhance the quality of life. The blend of scientific research, clinical
application and commercial advancement has created a new outlook to the treatment based on biological
implants. The prospects of the use of materials in different areas of surgery, the protection against
infection and the use of biological implants outside the authorized indications are of main concern. This
report analyzes the current biological implant procedures. Synopsis chapter of the report gives the
summary of total biological implants market by tissue/muscle; origin, and mode of administration at global
level and for each of the geographic regions - North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Rest of World.

History of Implants
An overwhelming concern about disease and outcome affects life in several ways. This concern is an
outcome of any disease or an injury that can bring about alterations in human bodies. Since 1989, much
hope has come in this highly complicated stream of implants. In the present moment, a person need not
lose his natural self if he suffers the loss of one of his organs or any tissue for that matter. Due to the
radical progress made in the realm of science, this has become a thing of the past.
The Need for a Better Implant
In earlier times, the wearing of an artificial eye for instance was considered much better than having no eye
at all, due to the cosmetic change it brought to the wearer. The wearing of the artificial eye was
cumbersome for the person sporting the same and it did not give a natural appearance because it did not
have movement. Thus, the first-generation implants lacked a natural appearance.
The first-generation implants suffered a lacuna in that the body would reject the implant or force it to
move away from its intended orbit. Then the need for establishing a better orbital implant arose, making it
obligatory to perform further surgeries to overcome this problem.
Naturally Derived Implants
In the quest for a natural appearance scientists stumbled upon the finding of the ocean coral and were
astounded to notice the similarity it possessed with the human bone. The porous structure of some coral species
was almost identical to the bone of man. Thus the period of naturally derived implants came into being.
Scientists found that the transformation of the essential mineral in the coral was hydroxyapatite. This
mineral, they discovered, could be matched and the approximation to the human bone could be made
more realistic.
It was found that since the hydroxyapatite implants exhibited the same porous and chemical structure of
the human bone, they were accepted by the surrounding tissue. The tissues then began growing into and
around the implant giving it the same status that it afforded to the natural bone. This however was not the
case with similar porous material such as medpor or bioceramic. Medpor is actually porous polyethylene
and bioceramic is also known as aluminum oxide. So it was seen that naturally derived implants had the
property of becoming an essential part of the human body.

After spending a number of years in introductory research, Dr. Arthur Perry was able to, finally in 1985,
perform an eye implant made of hydroxyapatite. This could be declared as the first orbital implant ever to
be made from this mineral. The movement of the implanted eye was almost similar to the natural eye
because the eye muscles were attached to it.
Researchers gradually improved on this eye implant and it was even possible to imbue the artificial eye
with the subtle darting movements that are noticed in the natural eye. This was achieved by fitting the
artificial eye over the tissues that encase the implant. To endow the artificial eye with a more natural
appearance a titanium peg could be used to facilitate enhanced movement.
Through all these efforts it was possible to obtain a more natural-appearing artificial eye which could not
be easily differentiated by an unsuspecting observer.

Orthopedic Biological Implants
Bone Graft Substitutes
S. No Substitute Remark
1 Autologous Growth Factor (AGF) used in
combination with autograft & ceramic graft
extender.
Safe when used as a graft extender in lumbar fusions.
2 Small pilot Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT)
comparing rhBMP-2 (bone morphogenetic
protein) to autograft for posterolateral
fusion.
rhBMP-2 used in combination with HA-TCP (V hydroxyapatite
- tricalcium phosphate) results in higher fusion rates than
autograft. rhBMP-2 may be used as a bone graft substitute
3 Multicenter RCT comparing rhBMP-2 with
autograft in anterior lumbar interbody fusion
(ALIF) with specific (LT) cage.
rhBMP-2 is a viable alternative to autograft for ALIF with
titanium cages
4 Interbody fusions using b2-TCP
(supplemented with venous blood only)
combined with structural autograft. Fusion
considered present in all cases.
β2-TCP may be used as a bone graft substitute in
combination with structural allograft & an interbody
application of venous blood.
5 Combined analysis of several series
comparing rhBMP-2 with autograft for ALIF
with specific (LT) cage.
rhBMP-2 is a viable alternative to autograft for ALIF with
titanium cages.
6 RCT comparing 3 groups treated with
noninstrumented PLF using various mixtures
of local autograft & apatite and wollanosite
(AWGC)
AWGC acts as an effective bone graft extender when used
with local autograft.

Segmentation of Global Biological Implants Market by Tissue/Muscle, by Origin, and by Mode of Administration Tissue/Muscle Origin Mode of Administration Orthopedic Allograft Surgical Soft Tissue Xenograft Injectable Cardiovascular - - Other* - - * Includes Dental, Ophthalmic and Urologic © RIT, 2013 History of Implants An overwhelming concern about disease and outcome affects life in several ways. This concern is an outcome of any disease or an injury that can bring about alterations in human bodies. Since 1989, much hope has come in this highly complicated stream of implants. In the present moment, a person need not lose his natural self if he suffers the loss of one of his organs or any tissue for that matter. Due to the radical progress made in the realm of science, this has become a thing of the past. The Need for a Better Implant In earlier times, the wearing of an artificial eye for instance was considered much better than having no eye at all, due to the cosmetic change it brought to the wearer. The wearing of the artificial eye was cumbersome for the person sporting the same and it did not give a natural appearance because it did not have movement. Thus, the first-generation implants lacked a natural appearance. The first-generation implants suffered a lacuna in that the body would reject the implant or force it to move away from its intended orbit. Then the need for establishing a better orbital implant arose, making it obligatory to perform further surgeries to overcome this problem. Naturally Derived Implants In the quest for a natural appearance scientists stumbled upon the finding of the ocean coral and were astounded to notice the similarity it possessed with the human bone. The porous structure of some coral species was almost identical to the bone of man. Thus the period of naturally derived implants came into being. Scientists found that the transformation of the essential mineral in the coral was hydroxyapatite. This mineral, they discovered, could be matched and the approximation to the human bone could be made more realistic. It was found that since the hydroxyapatite implants exhibited the same porous and chemical structure of the human bone, they were accepted by the surrounding tissue. The tissues then began growing into and around the implant giving it the same status that it afforded to the natural bone. This however was not the case with similar porous material such as medpor or bioceramic. Medpor is actually porous polyethylene and bioceramic is also known as aluminum oxide. So it was seen that naturally derived implants had the property of becoming an essential part of the human body.
  • 5. RITMIR010: Biological Implants – A Market Insight Report, July 2013 © RI Technologies - www.researchimpact.com Sample Page - 5 After spending a number of years in introductory research, Dr. Arthur Perry was able to, finally in 1985, perform an eye implant made of hydroxyapatite. This could be declared as the first orbital implant ever to be made from this mineral. The movement of the implanted eye was almost similar to the natural eye because the eye muscles were attached to it. Researchers gradually improved on this eye implant and it was even possible to imbue the artificial eye with the subtle darting movements that are noticed in the natural eye. This was achieved by fitting the artificial eye over the tissues that encase the implant. To endow the artificial eye with a more natural appearance a titanium peg could be used to facilitate enhanced movement. Through all these efforts it was possible to obtain a more natural-appearing artificial eye which could not be easily differentiated by an unsuspecting observer.
