  4. 4. What is Recycling? Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products.
  5. 5. Why Recycle? Benefits of recycling include ● Reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators ● Conserve natural resources such as timber, water and minerals ● Increase economic security by tapping a domestic source of materials ● Prevent pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials ● Save energy ● And many more!
  6. 6. What should I recycle? Many common household items made of plastic, metal, and glass can be recycled! However, these materials must be empty and rinsed clean of food residue before being recycled while paper materials must be empty, clean, and dry.
  7. 7. Common Recyclables • Paper • Plastic bottles • Glass bottles and jars • Cardboard • Food and beverage cans • Batteries • Electronics • Tires
  8. 8. What should I not recycle? Broken glass - Some glass contains chemicals that make it unsuitable for reuse at recycling plants. It is also dangerous to handle broken glass so not recycling broken glass can help ensure the safety of the workers sorting through the recycled materials. Garden Hoses - Hoses can get tangled in the recycling process and can cause disruption to the recycling facility. It is best for the recycling center workers and recycling machinery to avoid recycling garden hoses. Sewing needles - Sewing needles and other sharp objects could scratch or injure a worker, so it is best to safely discard sewing needles in containers such as empty pill bottles.
  9. 9. True or False? Single use batteries such as those found in TV remotes can be recycled.
  10. 10. True! Batteries can be recycled through mail-in programs or through collection events through your local solid waste district. Local recycling centers that accept batteries can be found using Earth 911’s Recycling Search website.
  11. 11. How to Recycle Recycling at home and on the go
  12. 12. Recycling at Home • Use a labeled at home recycling bin or bag next to your trash bin to easily sorted items • Remember to keep all food/liquid and loose plastic bags or bagged recyclables out of your recycling
  13. 13. Recycling on the Go Recycling bins are often in close proximity or placed with trash bins. Often, public bins have labels or pictures that identify which items can be recycled and the respective bin for each type of recyclables.
  14. 14. True or False? You can recycle food soiled containers, like the following greasy pizza box.
  15. 15. False! Food soiled containers, such as pizza boxes and takeout containers, are unable to be recycled with other common household items. The oil from the food does not allow the paper fibers to be separated out during the reprocessing cycle.
