ALABAMA

Alabama has an employment specialization in the agricultural feedstock and chemicals subsector (location
quotient of 1.77). Academic research expenditures in biosciences totaled $512 million in 2008, heavily
weighted to medical sciences ($299 million) and accounting for a higher percentage of both per capita and
total academic research expenditures than the national average.  Over the last six years, the largest share of
the State’s $135 million in venture capital investments was made in the medical diagnostics segment. With
2,949 postsecondary degrees in bioscience fields, Alabama placed higher than its population rank. The degrees
were concentrated in biological sciences and other life science fields.
