Earth Day in spring
Rebecca West
Georgia Standards:
-ELAGSEKRL7: With prompting and support, describe the relationship between
illustrations and the story (how illustrations support the text)

AASL Standards:
1. Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.
1.1.2 Use prior and background knowledge as context for new learning.
1.1.8 Demonstrate mastery of technology tools for accessing information and pursuing
inquiry
3. Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our
democratic society.
3.1.4 Use technology and other information tools to organize and display knowledge
and understanding in ways that others can view, use, and assess.
3.1.5 Connect learning to community issues.
Goals:
-Students will be able to identify and sort objects for recycling.
-Students will describe signs of spring.
Objectives:
-Presentation of spring
a. Include facts from the unit
b. Include event, day or signs of spring
Resources:
-Curated Content about Earth Day and Spring- Earth Day in Spring
- Technology Tool for Presentation-Storybird
Day 1: Students will come to the media center for story time using a fiction book and
nonfiction book. The media specialist will talk with students about the differences in the
fiction book and nonfiction book. Students will look at the illustrations to see how they
support the text.
Day 2: Students will meet with the media specialist in the media center to work on
laptops. The media specialist will review the Blend space information with the students.
On Blend space students can watch videos about the importance of recycling and
planting in connection with Earth Day. They will also be able to play an online game
where they sort items for recycling. Along with reading an online book about Dottie’s
Garden.
Day 3: Students will meet with the media specialist in the media center where the media
specialist will go over the different project options that students can choose to create or
perform to show what they have learned about Earth Day in spring. Students can
choose to create their own story using Storybird.com, act out a commercial or skit for
recycling, or show how planting can help our Earth. If students have other ideas they
can run the idea by the classroom teacher for a presentation.
Day 4 and 5: Students will have time to work on projects individually or within their
groups. They can stay in the classroom to work with the teacher or come to the media
center to work with the media specialist.
The Media Specialist will record group’s skits and/or commercials to run on the morning
announcements to show the importance of recycling.
