A personal garden can yield high quantities of food
each harvest with proper planning. Soil, for instance,
takes time to develop into a nutrient-rich substance
that promotes healthy growth. Home gardeners should
consider preparing their soil in raised beds to
maximize the number of rows created in a smaller
space. The soil should be cleared of weeds, rocks, sod,
and roots and should contain six inches of compost.

3.  Gardeners must nurture the soil throughout
the year. During the spring, when the soil
shows no sign of sogginess, the top few inches
should be aerated by raking the dirt with a
fork. Growing season requires empty beds to
be aerated as well. Prior to raking, gardeners
should cover the soil with new compost. To
prepare for winter, gardeners are advised to
layer compost or well-rotted manure over beds
that will be unused.
