2. LUNG CANCER
Lung cancer is a malignant lung tumor that is characterized by uncontrolled
cell growth in tissues of the lung. It is a very life-threatening cancer and
one of the most difficult cancers to treat.
Symptoms
• Chest pain
• Wheezing
• Fatigue
• Loss of appetite
• Continuous cough
• Coughing up blood
• Shortness of breathe
3. Risk Factors
• Tobacco (cigarette smoke) is the #1 cause
− Accounts for 90%
− 25% is from second-hand smoke
• Radon gas
• Asbestos exposure
• Air Pollution
• Family history
• Age
4. Geographical occurance
Total deaths worldwide caused by cancer each year
Lung cancer - 1,370,000 deaths
Stomach cancer - 736,000 deaths
Liver cancer - 695,000 deaths
Breast cancer - 458,000 deaths
5. Types of Lung Cancer
• Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)
− Most common type
− About 80-85% are NSCLC
− Grows more slowly
• Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC)
− Spreads more quickly and aggressively
− About 15-20% are SCLC
− Found mostly in heavy smokers
6. Stages and Treatment
for NSCLC
Stage Description Treatment option
Stage I Tumor of any size is found only in
the lung
Surgery
Stage II Tumor has spread to lymph nodes
associated with the lung
Surgery
Stage III Tumor has spread to the lymph
nodes in the tracheal area,
including chest wall and
diaphragm
Chemotherapy followed
by radiation or surgery
Stage IV Tumor has spread beyond the
chest
Chemotherapy only
7. Stages and Treatments
of SCLC
Limited Stage
– The cancer is confined to one area of the chest
– Treated with radiation therapy and chemotherapy
Extensive Stage
– A tumor has spread beyond the lung
– Accounts for 70% of SCLC
– Treated with chemotherapy only
8. Prevention
The best way for most people to reduce their risk of lung cancer is to
not smoke and also avoid breathing in other people's smoke
Reduce or eliminate radon gas exposure
Avoid exposure to known cancer-causing chemicals
Follow a healthy diet
Lung cancer screening
