  2. 2. What is a Prostate ? ● It is a male organ situated below the urinary bladder. ● Prostate is classically slightly larger than a walnut. ● The average weight of the healthy prostate is about 10 grams but when diseased it can increase to more than 100 grams.
  3. 3. What is a Prostate ? ● The prostate secretes fluid that nourishes and protects sperm. ● During ejaculation, the prostate squeezes this fluid into the urethra, and it’s expelled with sperm as semen. ● The organ doesn't have any function in old age.
  4. 4. What is a BPH ? ● BPH is part of the natural aging process, like getting gray hair or wearing glasses. ● BPH can be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle but 50% of all males above the age of 50 years are likely to get BPH. ● BPH can be treated.
  5. 5. PROSTATE ● Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy is not precursor for prostate cancer. ● Surgical treatment for BPH doesn't ensure the patient freedom from prostate cancer.
  6. 6. How Does it look? Normal Enlarged

What are the symptoms of Prostate Enlargement ● Hesitancy ( difficulty in starting to pass urine) ● Weak Stream ● Prolonged time to pass urine ● Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. ● Urinary infection ● Blood in Urine ● Urinary Retention (Inability to pass urine) When you have any of the above symptoms Consult an Urologist Immediately for investigations and treatment
  8. 8. When should BPH be treated? BPH needs to be treated ONLY IF: ● Symptoms are severe enough to bother the patient and affect his quality of life. ● Treatment can take the form of Medical Treatment or Endoscopic Surgery (Laser)
  9. 9. Medical Management ● Medical management takes form of tablets. ● They should be taken once a day and consists of Alpha blocker and Alpha 2 reductase blockers. ● Alpha Blockers should be taken at bedtime.
  10. 10. Medical Management ● Medical Management should not be discontinued and should be taken as long as it is effective. ● 50% of patients suffering from BPH on medical treatment respond and can avoid surgery.

  12. 12. Endoscopic Surgery with LASER ● Safer. ● No need to stop blood thinning drugs that are must for heart patients. ● Lesser blood loss. ● Fewer complications

  14. 14. Endoscopic Surgery with LASER ● Less pain after operation. ● Earlier discharge from hospital (24 – 48 hrs). ● Earlier resumption to work (3-5 days).
