Presented By: Rajni Ranjan KEY CONSIDERATIONS • Prepare and adopt a Business Plan that addresses financials, ownership, governance, management, and operations. • There must be a strong support network within the community including government, education, local business, and complementary service agencies. • Business incubators are service programs, not buildings. • There needs to be a focus on generating results as opposed to activity. • Adequate financing must be in place to ensure the manager doesn‟t have to become a full time professional fundraiser. • There must be a spirit of collaboration with complementary service agencies versus an attitude of protectionism and competition.

Cross pollination of ideas is good. Keep tenant costs down. Focus on important things, not glitter. Be realistic in what can be achieved. • Graduation policies for technology oriented companies must reflect patience. It takes a minimum of 4 years from concept to commercialization. • Ensure applicants fit into the incubator’s culture. • It’s necessary to have a few “anchor” tenants to ensure a steady stream of revenue. • Do not rely on private sector financial contribution as a regular on-going cost off-set.
