"The Namesake" novel written by Indo-American
novelist Jhumpa Lahiri. In this wonderful novel
Jhumpa Lahiri show the nostalgia feeling.
"The Namesake" novel published in September
2003. According to this novel people who fight only
for name and identity and struggle between two
different types of culture.

1. Name and identity :
Name and identity is the center theme in this
novel. In this novel Gogol Ganguli is the
struggle only for his name and his actual
identity. Gogol is not completely agree with his
name.
2. Language barrier:
In this novel we can see that the cultural
differences between U.s v/s India. That's why
in this novel's characters highly face many
difficulties about the language.

In this novel Lahiri including the nostalgic
atmosphere. People who miss their motherland,
mother tongue then their own tradition and many
other things. That's types of nostalgic atmosphere

consept of William Shakespeare's Love, life and
death in very deeply.

Plot of this novel
Ashima Ganguli is the central character in this novel
who is about to give a birth her first child in a
hospital. Parents can't leave the hospital before
they give their child name. At that time Ashoke
Ganguli give his child name is like Gogol Ganguli.
But some of the reason Gogol is not agree with
his name. The true story of that name is like.
When a day Ashoke Ganguli traveling by the train
at a same time train going to the big accident and
same time Ashoke read Nikolai Gogol's book "The
Overcoat" and he think this book only save my
That's why Ashoke give his child name Gogol.
But Gogol change his own name Gogol Ganguli
to Nikhil GanguliGogol's friends laugh on his
name and that's the reason Gogol feel really
bad.

Then Gogol going to Yale for the study. At a place
Gogol meet Maxine and her become the Gogol's
girlfriend. Gogol want marry with her but Ashima
not accept Maxine as a Gogol's wife. As a mother
or father Ashima and Ashoke really care for their
children. Ashima Ganguli is select to Maushumi
as the Gogol's wife. And after some time Gogol
marry with Maushumi but Gogol don't like or love
her.
Ashoke Ganguli working as a professor at
college. One day Ashoke Ganguli dead by the
heart attack.
In the end of this novel on the Gogol's birthday his
mother Ashima Ganguli give the birthday gift that
is book "The Overcoat" by Nikolai Gogol. And
then everything realise and he understand the
whole story why his dad give him to that name
and after Gogol totally agree with his name.

Nikolai Gogol is the symbol of Ashoke's
inspiration and as well as name symbol.

And protagonist of this novel.

amazing novel "The Namesake".
Analysis
This novel's analysis totally based on any kind of
name and it's identity. In the whole story Gogol
don't understand why his dad give him to that
name. But in the end of the novel he good
toagreed with Gogol name. In this novel Ashima
Ganguli is the example of loneliness and
homesickness. End of this story Ashima gave a gift
to Gogol and that is book of Nikolai Gogol and then
Gogol understand to his father Ashoke Ganguli. If
she not give this book so Gogol is not able to agree
with his name.
Clash of culture
Here, Jhumpa Lahiri clearly shows the two
different culture U.S and India. And Lahiri
describe many problems about the change
culture and there is conflict between two or
more culture within an organization. In
"The Namesake" we can see that the clash
between two culture and it's tradition,
language, and many more.
Style of writing
Writing style is the show the writers
uniqueness and creativity. Jhumpa Lahiri
most of her works of art wrote in diasporic
style. Through the works of art she show
her feelings and emotions for her
motherland. In her work we can see the
really of lifestyle. Jhumpa Lahiri carefully
draw the faminism and relations and
culture clash.
In the end
"The Namesake" is the very interesting novel
to read. Jhumpa Lahiri explores the Indian
immigrant experience in America.

try to write a story which is hard enough".
