3. Project 6- Introduction
• YIBD ‘Project R6’, designed by REX, is an urban
boutique residence for short-term business people,
young urban professionals, and foreign residents in
Seoul, South Korea. To meet the trends of its users and
compensate for its small unit size, R6 must create a
strong sense of community and its residences must be
highly attractive, providing generous views, daylight,
and cross-ventilation. Maximizing daylight and cross-
ventilation are also paramount to providing a highly
sustainable residence.

5. Site Location
• The site is located in the yongsan district, or the proposed yongsan international business district in Seoul, South Korea.
• The district is centrally located in seoul, and was previously used as a US base.
• The Yongsan International Business District was masterplanned by Daniel Libeskind and is the biggest urban
development project in South Korea. Due for completion in 2024, the masterplan was commissioned by South Korean
developer DreamHub.

6. Location of R6
Block R6 is a narrow parcel bounded by the planned Mountain Park—including Children’s Interactive
Spray Park, Rail Road Museum, Outdoor Amphitheatre and Yongsan Station Esplanade—and the
central park of the planned development Zone B3, adjacent to Hangang-ro. By placing the building
to the south of Block R6, all units command great views and the building forms a gateway to YIBD
from Hangang-ro.

8. Concept
• By pulling layers of the typical housing tower in opposing
directions, the small units maintain their size, but are
stretched into favourable proportions that provide views
and daylight from both sides, excellent cross-ventilation,
and a strong sense of community through the creation of a
central courtyard, roof terraces, and
conversation/reading/play pods.
• The mega-brace supports a shelf-like matrix of
walls and floor slabs that define each unit. Into
each shelf is inserted a wooden shell containing a
bathroom on one side and a kitchen on the other.
A movable wall—using standard compact
shelving technology—shifts within the unit to
define a bedroom or a living room.

9. • The tower constitutes a total of 512
apartments.
• Spread over a total of 40 floors and a total
height of 144 meters.
• The use of space remains in the same
proportion in the three typologies, with
“adjustable” rooms or spaces.

13. • Cut plans of the project could be of four
different types depending on the level
on which the plan is cut.
• A perfectly rectangular plan is found at
the level which has no projections on
either sides of the building.
• The toilets in the design are inwards
and lack direct ventilations.
Cut Plans
• The lower floors of the design serve
as shops and public areas.
• The design also facilitates multi level
underground parking for about 900
cars.
• The floor which are pulled out have
12 houses, and floors which form a
full rectangle without any
deformation have 14 houses.

14. Sections And Views
• Communityand spatialreliefare further
generated by conversation/reading/playpods
extending into the courtyard.
• Cross ventilationwas a very important
criterionfor the architectswhiledesigning this
structure, hence they came up with the design
of a hollow cuboid, which gets pulled in two
opposite directionsas seen in the section.

20. Project Brief
• Archipelago21, Studio Daniel Libeskind's masterplan
for the major redevelopment for the Yongsan
International Business District of Seoul, South Korea
dramatically reinvents the landscape of Korea’s historic
capital city. This sustainable urban development is
made up of over 30 million square feet of built area and
will include a new international business district,
world-class shopping, residential neighborhoods,
cultural institutions,educational facilities and
transportation, all sited in a large urban park along the
Han River.
• In addition to the masterplan, Studio Daniel Libeskind
is also the architect for 3 residential towers (The
Dancing Towers) and a office tower (Harmony Tower)
on the site.
greenarchworld.in
22. • The new large-scale district features a cluster of
residential, office and retail neighborhoods in an
extensive urban park along the Han River.
• The development entity is Yongsan Development
Co., Ltd, a South Korean conglomerate. The district
will also contain new cultural institutions,
educational facilitiesand rapid transportation
systems.
• “The idea is to create a 21st Century destination that
is at once transformative, vibrant, sustainable and
diverse,” Mr. Libeskind said. “I wanted to make each
form, each place, each neighbourhood as varied and
distinctive as possible. The plan, and each building
within it, should reflect the vertical and cultural
complexity of the heart of Seoul.

23. Outside the islands,the siteis
developed into a generous natural
landscape which acts as the “sea”
connecting the islandstogether. The
islandsbecome distinctneighborhoods
with their own unique program area,
character,communityand atmosphere.
Although they are distinctand human
scaled, together the islandscreate a
diverse and vibrant city life.These
island neighborhoods break down the
overall density and mass of the large
urban development.
The site is broken into “islands” — distinct forms that together, like an archipelago,
create a composition in the landscape

30. • The exceeding building mass is transformed into an upper and lower horizontal bar, which
bridge the two towers at 140 metre and 70 metre height forming the distinct “#” figure on the
skyline.
• The two towers are additionally connected through the arrival bar at the ground level and
through a courtyard below ground.
• Ultimately, the design not only triples the amount of ground floor but it also triples the amount
of social interaction and reintroduces the idea of neighbourhood within the tower complex.

32. DIAGONAL TOWER
by SOM
• American architects Skidmore,
Owings & Merrill designed a
skyscraper with glazed
triangular facets for emerging

International Business
District Of Seoul.
• The Diagonal Tower will be a
343-metre-high office block on
the north-eastern side of the
district.
• A web of netting will cloak a
double height entrance lobby at
the base of the tower, which will
lead up to over 145,000 square
metres of open-plan offices, a
fitness centre, a cafe and a
lounge in the penthouse to be
shared by all the offices.
