Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4
(How heat travels)
How does heat change Matter?
You can’t see heat or hold it in your
hands, but you can see how heat
changes the matter.
The sun heat the road day after
day, this made the road expand (get
bigger) Why??
o The matters are made of
particles.
o Adding heat, makes the particles
move faster and move farther
apart
o This make the matter expand.

o The particles slow down
o They move closer together
o The matter contract or gets
smaller.

* How the thermometer work to tell
the temperature ?
• A thermometer is a glass tube
filled with a liquid( mercury).
• The liquid expands or contracts to
show different temperatures.
• When thermometer is in a warm
place, the liquid expands and rises
• When air around thermometer
loses heat, the liquid contracts or
falls.
• The level tells you the
temperature.

11
Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4
(How heat travels)
Heat always flows from warmer
objects to cooler ones.
heat flows from a warmer table to a
cold ice pop, the table loses heat
and the ice pop gains heat, until they
are the same temperature.

Vocabulary: Heat Temperature Degree Conductor Insulator Objectives: I will be able to know: 1-heat is a kind of energy that makes things warmer. 2-how heat changes matter. 3-how can we control heat flow. 4-how can energy change. 9
  • 10. Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4 (How heat travels) when matter loses heat (cools): o The particles slow down o They move closer together o The matter contract or gets smaller. Vocabulary: Heat Temperature Degree Conductor Insulator Objectives: I will be able to know: 1-heat is a kind of energy that makes things warmer. 2-how heat changes matter. 3-how can we control heat flow. 4-how can energy change. 10
  • 11. Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4 (How heat travels) * How the thermometer work to tell the temperature ? • A thermometer is a glass tube filled with a liquid( mercury). • The liquid expands or contracts to show different temperatures. • When thermometer is in a warm place, the liquid expands and rises • When air around thermometer loses heat, the liquid contracts or falls. • The level tells you the temperature. Vocabulary: Heat Temperature Degree Conductor Insulator Objectives: I will be able to know: 1-heat is a kind of energy that makes things warmer. 2-how heat changes matter. 3-how can we control heat flow. 4-how can energy change. 11
  • 12. Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4 (How heat travels) Heat always flows from warmer objects to cooler ones. heat flows from a warmer table to a cold ice pop, the table loses heat and the ice pop gains heat, until they are the same temperature. Vocabulary: Heat Temperature Degree Conductor Insulator Objectives: I will be able to know: 1-heat is a kind of energy that makes things warmer. 2-how heat changes matter. 3-how can we control heat flow. 4-how can energy change. 12
  • 13. Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4 (How heat travels) How can you control the flow of heat? Why our cooking pots are made of metals such as iron or aluminum?  Heat moves quickly through metals.  The heat moves from the stove to the metal pot.  The pot gets warm. Vocabulary: Heat Temperature Degree Conductor Insulator Objectives: I will be able to know: 1-heat is a kind of energy that makes things warmer. 2-how heat changes matter. 3-how can we control heat flow. 4-how can energy change. 13
  • 14. Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4 (How heat travels) Materials such as metals are good conductors. Is a material that heat moves through easily. Vocabulary: Heat Temperature Degree Conductor Insulator Objectives: I will be able to know: 1-heat is a kind of energy that makes things warmer. 2-how heat changes matter. 3-how can we control heat flow. 4-how can energy change. 14 conductor
  • 15. Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4 (How heat travels) heat doesn’t move quickly through some other materials, such as wool, fur, cotton and wood. These materials are called insulators is a material that heat doesn’t move through easily. Vocabulary: Heat Temperature Degree Conductor Insulator Objectives: I will be able to know: 1-heat is a kind of energy that makes things warmer. 2-how heat changes matter. 3-how can we control heat flow. 4-how can energy change. 15 insulator
  • 16. Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4 (How heat travels)  In the cold weather people need to stay warm, they wear clothing that traps heat.  Insulation keeps heat inside the house. Vocabulary: Heat Temperature Degree Conductor Insulator Objectives: I will be able to know: 1-heat is a kind of energy that makes things warmer. 2-how heat changes matter. 3-how can we control heat flow. 4-how can energy change. 16
  • 17. Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4 (How heat travels)  Winters in the north get very cold.  How animals live and stay warm?  Good insulators cover their bodies.  Animals such as Walrus have layers of fat under their skin.  Fat is an excellent insulator. Vocabulary: Heat Temperature Degree Conductor Insulator Objectives: I will be able to know: 1-heat is a kind of energy that makes things warmer. 2-how heat changes matter. 3-how can we control heat flow. 4-how can energy change. 17
  • 18. Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4 (How heat travels)  Bears have very thick hair that helps trap heat inside the animal’s body.  The red-eyed tree frog can live only in warm places, such as rain forest.  In the cold places its thin skin would lose heat and die. Vocabulary: Heat Temperature Degree Conductor Insulator Objectives: I will be able to know: 1-heat is a kind of energy that makes things warmer. 2-how heat changes matter. 3-how can we control heat flow. 4-how can energy change. 18
  • 19. Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4 (How heat travels) How can energy change?  Heat is a form of energy.  Energy can change from one form to another.  Many forms of energy can change into heat. Vocabulary: Heat Temperature Degree Conductor Insulator Objectives: I will be able to know: 1-heat is a kind of energy that makes things warmer. 2-how heat changes matter. 3-how can we control heat flow. 4-how can energy change. 19
  • 20. Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4 (How heat travels) Examples: 1-Rub your hands together. Energy of moving changes into heat. The same reason, bending a wire or sawing wood produce heat. Vocabulary: Heat Temperature Degree Conductor Insulator Objectives: I will be able to know: 1-heat is a kind of energy that makes things warmer. 2-how heat changes matter. 3-how can we control heat flow. 4-how can energy change. 20
  • 21. Unit F,Ch.12, Lesson4 (How heat travels) Examples: 2-Fuel, such as wood or gasoline. They have energy locked in them, when fuel is burned, heat is given off. Food is fuel for your body. As your body uses food, heat is produced….that’s why your body has certain temperature.
