The Ottawa Food Bank: Who We Are
Our mission: To collect and distribute food to Member
Agencies serving people in need in the Ottawa area.
Our vision: That no one goes hungry in the Ottawa area.
Our responsibility is to those who are hungry in the Ottawa
Region, and we do everything that we can to provide them with
nutritious food. Through donations of food, time, and
money from individuals, businesses and local farmers
we are able to focus on our mission and vision.

The Issue
Since 2008, there has been a 33 percent increase in demand
for food bank services
At the Ottawa Food Bank, baby food and supplies is one of
the least distributed categories of food donations.
It currently accounts for only 3% of the products distributed
by this food bank
Baby Supply Cupboard program launched by the Ottawa
Food Bank is facing a shortage of support volunteers
8. +
The Issue
Infants without proper nutrition are at risk of developing life-long
health issues
Effected demographics include some of those who are already
most vulnerable
Health and well being of the entire family hinges on the nutrition
of the infant
In the 2012/2013 year caregivers in Ottawa received over 1000
cases of baby food and 5000 baby diapers from the food bank

early childhood cruial time for development- upsurge of health problems I the newest generation
Stunting is the irreversible outcome of chronic nutritional deficiency during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life.
Stunting means the height of a young child measures significantly lower than the norm for 95% of standard reference population in the age group.
Iron deficiancy is the most widespread nutrition problem- effects of infant iron deficiency include:
permanetly impaired brain development
increased morbidity and mortality from infections
decreased overall growth
2. Demographics effects include some of those who are already most vulnerable- parents who are young, single, immigrant, or simply of low-income families -cost of caring for a baby can increase a family’s annual expenses by roughly 8000 a year- not currently using it will become
3. Caregivers sacrifice their own nutrition- effect health/well being of entire family
Studies have shown that young mothers with more support during pregnancy, and within the first 12 months of their child’s lives are more likely to make better choices in regards to their child’s health
4. It is clear from last years statistics that infant malnutrition is not just a third world distant problem but one that exists right here in Ottawa.
The needs: Baby food, diapers, baby formula, other baby food products.
Exists to serve a very important social cause. The demand is high and effects our present and future to gives those in need an opportunity for healthy eating habits.
Allowing this category to remain low on the list of donations could lead to an upsurge of health problems in the newest generation, including brain deficiencies and other health deficiencies.
Consequences of not having as many donations are that it is a first come first serve so their will be families who are in dire need left without due to lack of resources. This then can cause mothers to sacrifice their food or their health for the health of their child, and then leads to a chain of malnutrition and struggle. If we have more donations we are able to help a wider area of people and really give to those who need it most, the ones who cant help themselves. Ties into lifestyle in how it enables mothers to nourish their children effectively and create a strong foundation to raise a healthy child. By participating it creates opportunity for those in need.
Haha Emily Parsons is a real person I know!
We can mention in true honesty that being a mentor mother isn’t for everyone, and there’s nothing wrong with not being able to do it.
Highlight that perhaps they cannot commit to being hands-on with the program and becoming a mentor mother, but perhaps they can continue to spread the word of our program and have a more back-stage role in the program.

If you want to have an ongoing impact on the Baby Food Cupboard, create a partnership with us so that you can continuously be doing your part.
- Companies who create baby food can give monthly donations in return for free advertising through the supply cupboard maybe?
