RSD Relating Systems Thinking and Design

Crowdsourcing has become a popular means to solicit assistance for scientific research. From classifying images or texts to responding to surveys, tapping into the knowledge of crowds to complete complex tasks has become a common strategy in social and information sciences. Although the timeliness and cost-effectiveness of crowdsourcing may provide desirable advantages to researchers, the data it generates may be of lower quality for some scientific purposes. The quality control mechanisms, if any, offered by common crowdsourcing platforms may not provide robust measures of data quality. This study explores whether research task participants may engage in motivated misreporting whereby participants tend to cut corners to reduce their workload while performing various scientific tasks online. We conducted an experiment with three common crowdsourcing tasks: answering surveys, coding images, and classifying online social media content. The experiment recruited workers from three sources: a crowdsourcing platform for crowd workers, a commercial survey panel provider for online panelists, and a research volunteering website for citizen scientists. The analysis seeks to address the following two questions: (1) whether online panelists, crowd workers or volunteers may engage in motivated misreporting differently and (2) whether the patterns of misreporting vary by different task types. We further seek to examine potential correlation between the patterns of motivated misreporting and the data quality of complex scientific research tasks. The study closes with suggestions of quality assurance practices of incorporating collective intelligence to improve the system for massive online information analysis in social science research.

The research domain of end-user’s information security behaviours has been gaining much attention over the recent years. While the nature of intention to perform information security behaviours are being revealed, there are still gaps in this area. In particular, few studies have addressed whether such intention remains across contexts, especially from home to public places. Secondly, the amount of the cyber-threats swells with the increase of personal devices with the rapid adoption of the BYOD trend. This research employed MSEM methods to develop a conceptual model based on Protection Motivation Theory by using data collected from 252 higher education students in a BYOD Australian university. Our findings confirmed and explored in details how intention to perform information security behaviours varied due to the change of context. Academics and practitioners could mitigate the security gap by focusing on the intention’s differences discussed in our findings.

There are essential security considerations in the systems used by semiconductor companies like TI. Along with other semiconductor companies, TI has recognized that IT security is highly crucial during web application developers' system development life cycle (SDLC). The challenges faced by TI web developers were consolidated via questionnaires starting with how risk management and secure coding can be reinforced in SDLC; and how to achieve IT Security, PM and SDLC initiatives by developing a prototype which was evaluated considering the aforementioned goals. This study aimed to practice NIST strategies by integrating risk management checkpoints in the SDLC; enforce secure coding using static code analysis tool by developing a prototype application mapped with IT Security goals, project management and SDLC initiatives and evaluation of the impact of the proposed solution. This paper discussed how SecureTI was able to satisfy IT Security requirements in the SDLC and PM phases.

This is a talk presented at International Symposium on Grids and Clouds (ISGC), Taipei, Taiwan, March 20, 2015. Abstract: Reusable infrastructure (systems created by one or more people and intended to be used by other people) has become essential for many types of research over the last century, from microscopes to telescopes, and from sequencers to colliders. Over the past few decades, much research infrastructure has become digital, and many new digital systems have been developed. Here we discuss e-Research infrastructure (also called cyberinfrastructure), which has been defined by Craig Stewart as consisting of “... computing systems, data storage systems, advanced instruments and data repositories, visualization environments, and people, all linked together by software and high performance networks to improve research productivity and enable breakthroughs not otherwise possible.” While the research infrastructure as a whole is important, it is useful to consider infrastructure elements as well, as they comprise the overall infrastructure. Each element has a technical context (which allows one to ask questions about its architecture, such as: How does it fit into the overall infrastructure? How does it interact with other infrastructure elements?), a social context (which allows one to ask questions about its developers, such as: Who has developed the element?, and it users, such as: Who uses the element?, and its purpose, such as: What is the intended use of the element?), and a political context (which allows one to ask questions about its funders, such as: Who funds the development and maintenance?, and about its political scope, such as: Is the element national? International?). Understanding how a particular infrastructure element can be created and sustained requires answering two pairs of questions: What resources are needed to create it, and how can those resources be assembled and applied? What resources are needed to sustain it, and how can those resources be assembled and applied? In this paper, we focus on the second half of the two questions, since the amount and type of needed resources vary with the specific element being discussed. We believe elements of e-Research infrastructure can be placed in a three-dimensional space, consisting of temporal duration, spatial extent, and purpose. Note that the number of users of a given element should be larger the farther the element is from the origin in any direction, as should the cost. These two elements (number of users and cost) can be generically called ‘scale’ in this context. Alternatively, we can attempt to map impact, rather than usage, as an element of scale. In either case, scale is thus a metric of the space, though it is not orthogonal to any of the three axes. This talk with discuss how placing potential elements in this space allows decisions to be made on which elements should be pursued.

From humanity’s existential risks to safety risks in critical systems to ethical risks, responsible AI, as the saviour, has become a massive research challenge with significant real-world consequences. However, achieving responsible AI remains elusive despite the plethora of high-level ethical principles, risk frameworks and progress in algorithmic assurance. In the meantime, software engineering (SE) is being upended by AI, grappling with building system-level quality and alignment from inscrutable ML models and code generated from natural language prompts. The upending poses new challenges and opportunities for engineering AI systems responsibly. This talk will share our experiences in helping the industry achieve responsible AI systems by inventing new SE approaches. It will dive into industry challenges (such as risk silos and principle-algorithm gaps) and research challenges (such as lack of requirements, emerging properties and inscrutable systems) and make the point that SE is the linchpin of responsible AI. But SE also requires some fundamental rethinking - shifting from building functions to AI systems to discovering and managing emerging functions from AI systems. Only by doing so can SE take on critical new roles, from understanding human intelligence to building a thriving human-AI symbiosis.

Actors in this study are part of the Linux kernel community where they collaborate on one or more sub-projects using mailing lists as the primary method of collaboration. Collaboration occurs in real-time between actors that contribute to multiple sub-projects, work for firms that pay them to contribute to the Linux kernel, and are working virtually from locations across the globe. This complex setting can be better understood by using several dimensions of proximity: organizational, cognitive, institutional, social, and geographical. Collaboration is analysed using data from source code contributions and mailing list participation. Open source software is developed in the open where anyone can view the source code and anyone with the knowledge to do so can contribute to the project. With no central group responsible for coordination of tasks, collaboration on the development of this software is emergent. Because people from around the world work on these projects together using online tools with publicly accessible interactions between people, it is a relevant setting for using social network analysis to understand and model network relationships.

Systemic visual knowledge translation for breast and colorectal cancer research. Current Oncology 2017 (in press). The Clinical Map visually represents breast and colorectal cancer processes across Canadian provincial and territorial systems. A roadmap metaphor illustrates a system-wide view of patient flow across the stages of cancer care. Green “road signs” identify clinical cancer stages across the roadmap: Pre-Diagnosis, Peri-Diagnosis, Diagnostic Interval, Diagnosis, Treatment, Rehabilitation, After Care, and Survivorship (with Palliative Care expressed as an end point). The visual metaphor of seasonal trees visually connects these stages to the patient’s cancer journey from pre-diagnosis (summer) through treatment (winter), followed by new growth (spring) in survivorship. The levels of primary, secondary and tertiary care guide the vertical dimension. Information and communications technology reaches across levels and stages, but is shown disconnected from primary care. The road-like pathways are colour-coded where experts differentiated care pathways between breast cancer (pink) and colorectal (blue). Where not distinguished (white), the pathways indicate current practices shared across the cancer journeys. Yellow navigation signs indicate cancer events across primary care pathways. Starting with Prevention and ending with Long-term Care, these events show points for primary care continuity during cancer treatment. A parallel path below the stages indicates where some patients may also employ complementary or alternative therapies. Significant areas of complexity generalized across cancer care are revealed in peri-diagnosis and the diagnostic interval pathways. A patient can be screen-detected (and then present to a family physician, shown in the breast cancer pathway) or may be initially diagnosed in primary care (white pathway). The circular pathways in the diagnostic cycle suggest multiple possible tests within primary care. With a primary care diagnosis, patients are referred and flow to secondary/tertiary cancer care. The stages of intake, biopsy, pathology, and confirmed diagnosis are shown, and the complex pathways of cancer treatment, shown on the map in a typical (not definitive) order of surgery, radiation/chemotherapy, and continuing treatment through assessment of outcome.

By Peter Stoyko Complex systems are difficult to understand without the aid of visuals. There are too many moving parts to mentally keep track of. The parts interact in too many ways. The whole system is cognitively overwhelming insofar as it cannot be absorbed in one go without the aid of an external reference. That is partly due to humans' inability to juggle more than a few complicated ideas in working memory at one time. Thus, visuals are a simplifying and organizing device that complements the way human naturally think if they are designed well. This poster is an early glimpse of a larger project (called SystemViz) that explores what it means to design such visuals well.

The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
