Visualization
Challenge
The challenge that we were going to address was about making online education more
interactive, much easier, and student-friendly especially when there is a sudden change from
offline to online education. Students not only prefer going to school or college just to get an
education but also many other things associated with their health and social wellbeing.
Comparatively, online education lacks such interaction and practical knowledge convey
methods.
Selection
Visualization is about using images. It’s not about drawing; it’s about visual thinking. It pushes
us beyond using words or language alone. It is a way of unlocking a different part of our brains
that allows us to think nonverbally.
When you explain an idea using words, the rest of us will form our own mental pictures, usually
informed by our training. When you say, “We need a new growth platform,” the IT specialist
sees servers and code and the marketing guru sees an advertising campaign. If instead, you
present your idea to us by drawing a picture of it, you reduce the possibility of unmatched mental
models.
The first tool I used was the tool of Visualization, or Visual Thinking to make a possible solution
for making online classes more interactive and help full students during this pandemic.
I selected visualization as a tool to solve the problem which I was going to address as it was very
complex and based on many thoughts that a student expects or enjoys during a complete course
session he/she gets from an institution. Making education more enjoyable and especially during
this pandemic when we all are locked down at home.
Application
I started the process by closely observing the online education methods and try to brainstorm the
problem that a student faces which creates the lack of attention to online education. Started to
draw scribbles on a blank sheet of paper. I took the help of my teammates and drew in the sheet
whatever problem we thought to be a problem in online classes. We took some volunteers and
gave them sheets to draw their notions on online classes.
The drawing format was 11” X 14” tracing paper. This size provided a compromise between
smaller formats where often it is difficult to explore details and larger formats that are difficult to
fill. In the initial phase team members and volunteers were challenged to move beyond single
solutions and explore a broad range of opportunities.
The next phase was to transform loose concepts into a meaningful design. This was achieved
through the construction of more accurate visualizations and sorting down the same points that
the volunteers expressed through it which communicated a clearer intent using tracing paper
overlays to develop the design. Soon people were able to visualize the problem they need to
work on or the area they were facing the problem.
The final deliverable was a detailed drawing of their thoughts on problems faced in online
education and some sort of ways to overcome it, at last, we found out the complete evolution of
our concept on the way the problem needed to be addressed.

There were areas we need to gain data like a number of student-facing network issues during this
online education and how the teachers need to approach a particular area of their subject by using
more interactive videos and interactive new possible ways to solve a particular equation in maths
our field of interest.
INSIGHT AND APPROACH
By conducting this exercise with several groups I learned that drawing or designing graphics
incorporates a person or a group of people essential feedback. Which stands is important for
reinforcing their understanding of the problem they are working to solve, the more precious
aspect of the activity is the shared insights and shared learning that occurs while they are
working to define their problem space. The graphic gives the diverse group of a team a focal
point for discussion that allows them to share their perspectives and develop insights into which
helps to find root causes of their problems more efficiently and enhanced way. Where they could
create the graphic from a blank slate in a collaborative manner and more easy way to view their
points they need to cover. People can quickly identify where they are in the graphic or if there is
something missing and can more quickly gain new insights about relationships between key
entities instead of taking time to identify them. A team working on a problem can also identify
variables in the problem space that is, it helps them to identify what they don’t know, in what
areas they need to obtain information and work accordingly to gain data and pave there a way to
sort out the problem in a design thinking approach.
