One of the major developments in automotive industry in past decade is Human & Machine
interfaces. HMI in few sentences,
HMI encompasses multiple systems which allow drivers to interact with vehicle

Main goal of testing is achieving 100% test
coverage.
Functional testing, a major testing phase plays a
vital role in achieving this coverage.
On an average, 12% of functional tests could not
be covered due to environment limitation & code
delay.
Most automotive components pass through similar

Functional testing on HMI will be around the major functional areas like,
Entertainment
• Encompasses the tests around
CD, DVD, TV, Radio, Plug-ins etc.
• Eg: To play the contents of the
CD and save it on HMI
Navigation & Maps
• Tests the GPS system inbuilt to
HMI to guide drivers with routes
and directions
• Eg: Set direction to a destination
& finding the nearby coffee shop.
Communication & interfaces
• Testing components like
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Internet.
• Eg: Connect a handset via
bluetooth and read the messages
on HMI
LIMITATIONS
Availing all the devices for testing Complex scenarios consumes the tester’s time
Replicating real-time connection in Test room Regression becomes unrealistic

5. SOLUTION – SIGNALS TESTING
‘Signal Testing’ is an alternative solution addressed here to overcome the limitations.
Signals are bytes of data generated by various devices & flow throughout out car
Here, each byte carries significant information about the particular function
In Signals testing, these signals flowing from devices to HU are simulated so as testing
can be performed in absence of those devices.
ILLUSTRATION
Consider an example for typical signal flow in measuring tyre pressure in HMI,

Selecting ‘Tyre pressure’ in HMI triggers a signal is sent to the tyre sensor
Tyre sensors sends response to HMI, which interprets & displays the values

Signals testing involve three basic pre-requisites to be performed to carry out the
simulation process.

Once the catalog and user-defined functions are available, the next step is processing
the signal and sending it to HMI.
