INTRODUCTION
Multitasking- doing two or more things at once, or rapidly switching from one task
to another is a characteristic of the Millennial generation.
Millennial Generation-Most recent entrants to the workforce from 2005
Comfortable with technology, entrepreneurial, want to get rich quickly, high sense
of entitlement.
Fact’s about the Multitasking
Multitasking leads to as much as a 40% drop in productivity, increased stress, and a
10% drop in IQ.
In the case of music, we have a special part of our brain for music, so we can listen
to music while we do other things.
Use a computer for work are distracted around once ever 10.5 minutes. In an 8 hour
work day, your average employee might lose up to 2.5 hours to distractions.
ADVANTAGES
• Ability to have several applications open
and working at the same time.
• It give higher priority to user.
• Time management
• Different projects can also stimulate our
creativity.
DISADVANTAGES
• Multi-tasking May Damage the Brain.
• Producing poor work quality compared to someone who is assigned to do only
one thing.
• The strength of the brain ,is in its ability to switch very rapidly from one task to
another.
• Low grade efficiency.
CASE-STUDY ANALYSIS
• Is multitasking good use of our time ?
• Why people started to do multitasking ?
• Multitasking = parallel computing .
• Now do you think people of this generation are smarter?
• A Brain can process 1 information at a time.
• Then what really we mean by “multitasking by human “?
• Human Brain switches to and fro between multiple tasks
CASE-STUDY ANALYSIS
• What's wrong in it , isn’t almost the same ?
• No.
• Multitasking consumes more time.
• Work quality & overall productivity goes down.
• No multitasking is not a good use of our time.
• Then why do we prefer multitasking ?
• Multitasking = Efficiency (misconception).
How multitasking can be related to motivation?
• Self efficacy theory.
• Expectancy theory.
Q.1 One expert who has studied multitasking calls it “a big illusion”, arguing that multitaskers
think they are more motivated and productive even when they aren’t.
Do you consider yourself a multitasker ? if so, does this case makes you reconsider-whether
multitasking makes you more motivated or productive?
QUESTIONS
Answer :
1.People tend to do things in haste through aid of technology which makes
multitasking more prevalent.
2. If we take example of we students, we often keep our cell-phones besides us so
that we can respond to texts while busy preparing lessons and surfing the net.
3.It does makes us feel productive but at the same time it makes us feel drained out
and stressed because of the things we do all at once.
4.Even in the free time, we people try to engage in other productive activities so
as to enhance our skills.
The effects of multitasking have been found to be more
negative when the tasks are more complex. Why do you think
this is the case?
Q.2
The effects of multitasking have been found to be more negative when the tasks are
more complex. Why do you think this is the case?
Answer:
1.According to studies of scientists, Multitasking creates a mixture of brain
problems, from severe stress to rage in adults to learning problems and autism like
behaviour in children.
2.Multitasking is less efficient. The human brain switches tasks like a bad amateur
plate-spinner.
3.Doing 2 or more things at once put a lot of pressure on our brains as compared to
doing tasks one after another.
4. Pioneer of this research Prof Earl Miller conducted experiments on volunteers
who performed various tasks and Found that when there is a group of visual
stimulants in front of you only one or two things tend to activate your brain
Indicating we are only focusing on one or two items.
5.Bigger problems occurs when we try to do complex tasks because it overloads the
brains processing activity.
Q.3
You might think multitasking makes you happy. While there is less research on this
topic, some evidence suggests multitasker’s feel more stress in their work.
Multitasker’s “ feel a constant low-level panic”do you agree?
Why or why not?
Answer:
As our minds fill with noise feckless synaptic events signifying nothing the brain
gradually loses its capacity to attend fully and gradually to anything, he wrote.
Desperately trying to keep up with a multitude of jobs, we “feel a constant low level
of panic and guilt.”
Q.4
One expert recommends we “recreate boundaries” by training ourselves, while
doing something, not to look at other devices like cell-phone or television for
increasing periods of time. Do you think you could do that? for how long?
Answer:
Recreate boundaries means training yourself not to look at your BlackBerry every 20
seconds, or turning off your cellphone. It means trying to change your work culture
so such devices are banned at meetings.
Sleeping less to do more is a bad strategy. We are efficient only when we sleep
enough, eat right and exercise.
CONCLUSION
• But newly released results of scientific studies in multitasking indicate that carrying on
several duties at once may reduce productivity, not increase it.
• Rubenstein and his associates David Meyer, Ph.D., and Jeffrey Evans, Ph.D., determined that
for all types of tasks, subjects lost time when they had to switch from one task to another.
Thank-you..
