What Happened to Profibus? – Advanced Physical Layer
What is APL?
▪ A two-wire Ethernet for process automation and
hazardous locations, based on IEEE and IEC
standards.
▪ APL is a standard for the Physical Layer.
▪ The goal of APL is to bring Ethernet down to field
level instruments in hazardous areas.
▪ APL will limit current and voltage in the
physical Layer to have an intrinsically safe
solution.
▪ The physical connection will be a
rugged two-wire connection with power
over this cable.
▪ APL will exceed the 100 m limit of
100BASE-TX Ethernet networks to be
suitable for large installations.

▪ The limitation of Ethernet infrastructure has
now been removed.
▪ It can now be installed in hazardous areas and
over a wider area.
▪ Only the Physical Layer has changed. All other
layers of the ISO / ISO model remain unchanged.

▪ Ethernet-APL is a technology, that enables Ethernet
communication over 2 wires instead of 4 or 8 with
intrinsic safety into the hazardous environment.
▪ For end users, Ethernet-APL provides a secure, high-
speed powered ethernet networking solution
throughout the plant — including intrinsically safe
areas.
▪ For future projects, it allows for simplified project
infrastructure planning, speedier commissioning, and
provides ultimate flexibility with support for all
process automation communication protocols.
▪ Suppliers can take advantage of high-speed,
intrinsically safe, powered ethernet in their 21st
century instrument, infrastructure, and application
software designs.

  • 8. 8 PROFIBUS& PROFINETInternational(PI) What Happened to Profibus? – Advanced Physical Layer What is APL? ▪ A two-wire Ethernet for process automation and hazardous locations, based on IEEE and IEC standards. ▪ APL is a standard for the Physical Layer. ▪ The goal of APL is to bring Ethernet down to field level instruments in hazardous areas. ▪ APL will limit current and voltage in the physical Layer to have an intrinsically safe solution. ▪ The physical connection will be a rugged two-wire connection with power over this cable. ▪ APL will exceed the 100 m limit of 100BASE-TX Ethernet networks to be suitable for large installations.
