What is Happiness?
What is happiness?
Happiness is a messy concept, and when people think about it they tend to
confuse two surprisingly distinct domains:
1. Well-being is the sum of emotions you experience moment to moment. If
you ask someone "how are you feeling right now?" over and over again you
can get a picture of someone's well-being.
2. Life satisfaction is the answer to the question "How satisfied are you with
your life?". Surprisingly, this is quite distinct from well-being. That is, you can
experience a lot of positive emotions but not be satisfied with your life, and
you can be very satisfied with your life, but largely suffer moment-to-moment.
• Happiness is subjective.
• "Happiness is the meaning and purpose of life, the
whole aim and end of human existence."- Aristotle
• Happiness is not determined by what's happening
around you, but rather what's happening inside you.
• Happiness comes when you feel contented and fulfilled
.How happy can we be, depends on how we choose to
act and think.
Why practice happiness?
• In addition to making us feel good, happiness improves other aspects of our
lives.
• Happy people are less likely to get sick, and they live longer.
• Happy people are more productive at work, and have better marraiges and
friends
• Happy people cope better with stress and trauma.
How to Cultivate Happiness?
• 50 percent of happiness is determined by our genes and 10 percent by our life
circumstance, but 40 percent depends on our daily activities.
• Awe Narrative: Recall and describe a time when you experienced awe.
• Best Possible Self: Imagine your life going as well as it possibly could, then
write about this best possible future.
• Best Possible Self for Relationships: Imagine your relationship going as well
as it possibly could.
• Mental Subtraction of Positive Events: Visualize what your life would be like
without the good things you have.
• Meaningful Photos: Photograph, then write about, things that are meaningful
to you.
• Some people perceive happiness as an object that they can obtain.
• They equate recognition, achievement, and financial security with happiness.
• Some people enter relationships looking for happiness, and hope that the person
they find can replace their emptiness with satisfaction.
• But happiness is not an object.
• Through social conditioning, we have been taught that happiness
is external and experienced during a state of pleasure.
• When our parents surprised us with an ice cream cone, we felt
happy.
• But happiness isn’t the ice cream cone, it’s the joy, love, and bliss
of sharing the moment with your parents.
What is Success?
WHAT IS SUCCESS?
• Success is the status of having achieved and accomplished an aim or
objective.
• Being successful means the achievement of desired visions and
planned goals.
• Furthermore, success can be a certain social status that describes a
prosperous person that could also have gained fame from its favourable
outcomes.
• How to define Success in Life?
Every person is thinking differently about being prosperous in life and is defining success in another way, so
there can’t exist a definition that is suitable for all. It is very important that you know exactly how to define
success in life! Make yourself aware what accomplishment, success, and prosperity in general means to you
in your life. Once you have figured out what is important for you personally you are able to focus on your
visions and goals.
• Meaning of success
1)Action is the foundational key to all success. ~ Pablo Picasso
2)Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other. ~ Abraham Lincoln

IMPORTANCE OF SUCCESS
• Success provides confidence, security, a sense of well-being, the ability to contribute at a greater
level, hope and leadership. Without success, you, the group, your company, your goals, dreams
and even entire civilizations cease to survive.
• Without continued success, the company, dream, even entire races will cease to exist, as was the
case with the Vikings, Romans, Greeks, American Indians and then an endless list of companies
and products.
Success should never be reduced to something that does not matter or isn't important.
• If you are unable to succeed in taking care of your children, they will be taken over by the state.
For an individual or group to continue on, he or she must actively accomplish his or her goals
and targets (succeed) or he or she will cease to exist.
Regardless of what goals you are trying to attain, success is important.
• Success is valuable, important and necessary for survival.
What is the difference
between Success and
Happiness?
"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you
love what you are doing you will be successful." ~ Albert Schweitzer
• Understanding the difference between being successful
and being happy is vital. Success is great, but not if it
costs you your happiness. If you’re meeting goals and
overcoming challenges with a light and free heart, then
you’re doing life right. Keep going! But if you’re
dragging yourself along every step of the way, it’s time
to stop and rethink your priorities. Here are some key
ideasthat will help us understand the difference
between success and happiness:
• Success is meeting deadlines. Happiness is working
toward your goals.
• Meeting deadlines is a good thing, but if you’re
unhappy throughout the process, it’s time to figure out
what the issue is and take steps to fix it. Could it be that
you’re meeting other people’s deadlines (i.e. taking on
work that is not yours)? Are you working in a field that
aligns with your natural gifts and strengths? If not, you
might feel like you’re swimming upstream.
• Goals are stepping stones that take you closer to your
dreams. Goals have their own deadlines, and meeting
those deadlines will bring you success—the happy kind.
• Success is keeping the knowledge you
develop to yourself. Happiness is sharing
your expertise freely.
• You’ve worked hard to get to where you
are. You’ve put in the time and done the
classes, and it shows in your
achievements. Many people at this stage
will clutch their know-how to their
chests, fearing that others will surpass
their accomplishments. But insecurity will
only hold you back from the joy of seeing
your abilities multiplied in those who
learn from you.
• “Happiness always looks small while you
hold it in your hands, but let it go, and
you learn at once how big and precious it
is.” -Maxim Gorky
• Success is focusing on accumulating wealth. Happiness is focusing on
improving your life.
• Money is useful, and having enough of it sure makes life easier. But money is
never a guarantee of happiness. Some of the most miserable people on our
planet are also the richest.
• There is a kind of wealth out there that far outweighs a fat bank balance.
Investing in relationships yields returns of love and shared experiences that
money can never buy. Ask any pianist what an hour a day at the piano can
bring. Invest your time into more than just making money.
• Success is being promoted above your
peers. Happiness is being respected by
your peers.
• Promotion is a good goal to work
towards. But clawing your way to the top,
not caring about who you have to step on
to get there, will not bring you lasting
peace or satisfaction.
• “Since you get more joy out of giving joy
to others, you should put a good deal of
thought into the happiness that you are
able to give.” -Eleanor Roosevelt
• Success is striving for more. Happiness is
being content with what you have.
• Are you living in a constant rut of “not
enough”? A life spent only
chasing bigger, better, and more will leave
you empty and tired. Shift your focus.
Instead of just living as an accumulator, start
living as a distributor and watch your
happiness skyrocket.
• Open your eyes to the blessings surrounding
you, and live fully aware of how much you
have. If you can’t see it, take a day off and
hang out with someone who has less than
you. Choose to be grateful and appreciate
every small aspect of what you have.
To conclude…
• Happiness can be understood as a
feeling of content whereas success is
the achievement of a task or goal.
• Success can be temporary, and
dependent whereas happiness is not.
• Unlike fairy tales or novels where
happiness comes at the end of the
story, happiness in real life does not
wait to come in your life when you are
successful.
• One can be happy on his journey to his
goals and happiness comes from within.
It is not something that comes with
success.
Which is Better?
Happiness OR Success?
• There has always been a sort of debate surrounding this issue, and
truly, it is difficult to pinpoint which is better with certainty.
• There are equal and convincing arguments for both sides.
• It is possible not to be happy while rich, because if you
aren’t doing something you love and find satisfying or
fulfilling, you aren’t really successful.
• Moreover, you can always cheat, lie, and steal your way
to success but you won’t be happy because you will
always be looking over your shoulder thinking that
someone will do it to you.
• “Money can never make you happy if you are an
unhappy person”-Robert Kiyosaki
•Lastly and most importantly happiness is greater than success
because happiness promotes self esteem which is the feeling
that you are important just the way you are and you don’t need
to change for anyone or anything.
•This means that you are happy with your life and you’re
satisfied with yourself. You don’t have to rely on anyone else.
•Success is always demanding more and more of you.
• On the other hand, one might argue that, when a person is
successful such as having a great paying job, a wonderful family,
and a college education, they are far more likely to be happier than
a person who is not successful.
• They would be able to fulfil their dreams and aspirations, leading
to satisfaction.
• Also, when a person is successful, they tend to be more confident
about themselves
•Personally however, I lean towards happiness over
success.
•Happiness is the highest level of success.
•I believe that true success can be achieved only if
one is satisfied from within.
•Without happiness and inner peace, all your money,
laurels, education, job have no meaning.
C o n c l u s i o n
• In conclusion we can see that both- success and happiness are
essential for a person. They are definitely complimentary to each
other.
• One would rarely find an unsuccessful man experiencing happiness
while a happy person not experiencing success.
• Though people may say that one does not really need to be
successful in order to be happy, if we analyse the situation carefully
we will find that he is actually successful.
• Success can be something as achieving the most simplest of things.
EXAMPLES:
• For a baby success can be something as simple as standing up without support, throwing a ball,
picking an object etc.
• They say some people who are poor are among the happiest. Well, in their case they too are
successful???
• HOW??
• They have succeeded in bearing their misfortune with a smile.
• They have succeeded in ridding themselves of want.
• They have succeeded in having no lust, avarice or greed.
• They have succeeded in learning the art of taking it one day at a time.
• And last but not the least they have succeeded in teaching themselves to be happy.
• Success too is important for a person, however it must be noted
that success and happiness go hand in hand. Being successful
means the person is happy.
• One is successful only when one is happy, else all efforts are
futile and that person is actually unsuccessful even though his
achievements may be numerous. You can have a high achieving
person, but that by no means say that he is successful.
• In order for him to be truly successful he has to make sure that
his achievements are making him happy. Unless he is happy, he
is unfortunately just a high achieving unsuccessful person.
• If we can stop looking at success as a measure of a person’s
importance, wealth, qualifications, achievements etc, we will find
that being successful is to be happy.
• In Wall Street lawyers are slogging everyday, running the clocks,
maintaining more than 100 hours a week, We say they are
successful simply because they are learned, earning a handsome
package and are working in some prestigious law firm.
• However if you read a bit of John Grisham, you will clearly see
that it is definitely not the case. They are actually very unhappy
despite being “Successful”.
• Thus in conclusion we can safely say that both success
and happiness are required in today’s world as one is
quite useless without the other.
• “You are happy only when you are successful and you
are
successful only when you are happy”.

Success and Happiness

  • 1. The battle between Success and Happiness. Which one is better? Presented By: 1. Mridula Dalvi (PRN: 15010125108) 2. Somya Anand (PRN: 15010125141) 3. Priyanka Gajbhiye (PRN: 15010125144) 4. Priyamvada Paneru (PRN: 15010125159) 5. Riya Rajesh (PRN: 15010125163)
  • 3. What is happiness? Happiness is a messy concept, and when people think about it they tend to confuse two surprisingly distinct domains: 1. Well-being is the sum of emotions you experience moment to moment. If you ask someone "how are you feeling right now?" over and over again you can get a picture of someone's well-being. 2. Life satisfaction is the answer to the question "How satisfied are you with your life?". Surprisingly, this is quite distinct from well-being. That is, you can experience a lot of positive emotions but not be satisfied with your life, and you can be very satisfied with your life, but largely suffer moment-to-moment.
  • 4. • Happiness is subjective. • "Happiness is the meaning and purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence."- Aristotle • Happiness is not determined by what's happening around you, but rather what's happening inside you. • Happiness comes when you feel contented and fulfilled .How happy can we be, depends on how we choose to act and think.
  • 5. Why practice happiness? • In addition to making us feel good, happiness improves other aspects of our lives. • Happy people are less likely to get sick, and they live longer. • Happy people are more productive at work, and have better marraiges and friends • Happy people cope better with stress and trauma.
  • 6. How to Cultivate Happiness? • 50 percent of happiness is determined by our genes and 10 percent by our life circumstance, but 40 percent depends on our daily activities. • Awe Narrative: Recall and describe a time when you experienced awe. • Best Possible Self: Imagine your life going as well as it possibly could, then write about this best possible future. • Best Possible Self for Relationships: Imagine your relationship going as well as it possibly could. • Mental Subtraction of Positive Events: Visualize what your life would be like without the good things you have. • Meaningful Photos: Photograph, then write about, things that are meaningful to you.
  • 7. • Some people perceive happiness as an object that they can obtain. • They equate recognition, achievement, and financial security with happiness. • Some people enter relationships looking for happiness, and hope that the person they find can replace their emptiness with satisfaction.
  • 8. • But happiness is not an object. • Through social conditioning, we have been taught that happiness is external and experienced during a state of pleasure. • When our parents surprised us with an ice cream cone, we felt happy. • But happiness isn’t the ice cream cone, it’s the joy, love, and bliss of sharing the moment with your parents.
  • 10. WHAT IS SUCCESS? • Success is the status of having achieved and accomplished an aim or objective. • Being successful means the achievement of desired visions and planned goals. • Furthermore, success can be a certain social status that describes a prosperous person that could also have gained fame from its favourable outcomes.
  • 11. • How to define Success in Life? Every person is thinking differently about being prosperous in life and is defining success in another way, so there can’t exist a definition that is suitable for all. It is very important that you know exactly how to define success in life! Make yourself aware what accomplishment, success, and prosperity in general means to you in your life. Once you have figured out what is important for you personally you are able to focus on your visions and goals. • Meaning of success 1)Action is the foundational key to all success. ~ Pablo Picasso 2)Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other. ~ Abraham Lincoln • How to achieve success in Life • Preparation • Work • Remember the GOLDEN RULE • Confidence • Lead
  • 12. HOW TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL • PREPARE • EXECUTE • REDOING
  • 13. IMPORTANCE OF SUCCESS • Success provides confidence, security, a sense of well-being, the ability to contribute at a greater level, hope and leadership. Without success, you, the group, your company, your goals, dreams and even entire civilizations cease to survive. • Without continued success, the company, dream, even entire races will cease to exist, as was the case with the Vikings, Romans, Greeks, American Indians and then an endless list of companies and products. Success should never be reduced to something that does not matter or isn't important. • If you are unable to succeed in taking care of your children, they will be taken over by the state. For an individual or group to continue on, he or she must actively accomplish his or her goals and targets (succeed) or he or she will cease to exist. Regardless of what goals you are trying to attain, success is important. • Success is valuable, important and necessary for survival.
  • 14. What is the difference between Success and Happiness? "Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing you will be successful." ~ Albert Schweitzer
  • 15. • Understanding the difference between being successful and being happy is vital. Success is great, but not if it costs you your happiness. If you’re meeting goals and overcoming challenges with a light and free heart, then you’re doing life right. Keep going! But if you’re dragging yourself along every step of the way, it’s time to stop and rethink your priorities. Here are some key ideasthat will help us understand the difference between success and happiness: • Success is meeting deadlines. Happiness is working toward your goals. • Meeting deadlines is a good thing, but if you’re unhappy throughout the process, it’s time to figure out what the issue is and take steps to fix it. Could it be that you’re meeting other people’s deadlines (i.e. taking on work that is not yours)? Are you working in a field that aligns with your natural gifts and strengths? If not, you might feel like you’re swimming upstream. • Goals are stepping stones that take you closer to your dreams. Goals have their own deadlines, and meeting those deadlines will bring you success—the happy kind.
  • 16. • Success is keeping the knowledge you develop to yourself. Happiness is sharing your expertise freely. • You’ve worked hard to get to where you are. You’ve put in the time and done the classes, and it shows in your achievements. Many people at this stage will clutch their know-how to their chests, fearing that others will surpass their accomplishments. But insecurity will only hold you back from the joy of seeing your abilities multiplied in those who learn from you. • “Happiness always looks small while you hold it in your hands, but let it go, and you learn at once how big and precious it is.” -Maxim Gorky
  • 17. • Success is focusing on accumulating wealth. Happiness is focusing on improving your life. • Money is useful, and having enough of it sure makes life easier. But money is never a guarantee of happiness. Some of the most miserable people on our planet are also the richest. • There is a kind of wealth out there that far outweighs a fat bank balance. Investing in relationships yields returns of love and shared experiences that money can never buy. Ask any pianist what an hour a day at the piano can bring. Invest your time into more than just making money.
  • 18. • Success is being promoted above your peers. Happiness is being respected by your peers. • Promotion is a good goal to work towards. But clawing your way to the top, not caring about who you have to step on to get there, will not bring you lasting peace or satisfaction. • “Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give.” -Eleanor Roosevelt
  • 19. • Success is striving for more. Happiness is being content with what you have. • Are you living in a constant rut of “not enough”? A life spent only chasing bigger, better, and more will leave you empty and tired. Shift your focus. Instead of just living as an accumulator, start living as a distributor and watch your happiness skyrocket. • Open your eyes to the blessings surrounding you, and live fully aware of how much you have. If you can’t see it, take a day off and hang out with someone who has less than you. Choose to be grateful and appreciate every small aspect of what you have.
  • 20. To conclude… • Happiness can be understood as a feeling of content whereas success is the achievement of a task or goal. • Success can be temporary, and dependent whereas happiness is not. • Unlike fairy tales or novels where happiness comes at the end of the story, happiness in real life does not wait to come in your life when you are successful. • One can be happy on his journey to his goals and happiness comes from within. It is not something that comes with success.
  • 22. • There has always been a sort of debate surrounding this issue, and truly, it is difficult to pinpoint which is better with certainty. • There are equal and convincing arguments for both sides.
  • 23. • It is possible not to be happy while rich, because if you aren’t doing something you love and find satisfying or fulfilling, you aren’t really successful. • Moreover, you can always cheat, lie, and steal your way to success but you won’t be happy because you will always be looking over your shoulder thinking that someone will do it to you. • “Money can never make you happy if you are an unhappy person”-Robert Kiyosaki
  • 24. •Lastly and most importantly happiness is greater than success because happiness promotes self esteem which is the feeling that you are important just the way you are and you don’t need to change for anyone or anything. •This means that you are happy with your life and you’re satisfied with yourself. You don’t have to rely on anyone else. •Success is always demanding more and more of you.
  • 25. • On the other hand, one might argue that, when a person is successful such as having a great paying job, a wonderful family, and a college education, they are far more likely to be happier than a person who is not successful. • They would be able to fulfil their dreams and aspirations, leading to satisfaction. • Also, when a person is successful, they tend to be more confident about themselves
  • 26. •Personally however, I lean towards happiness over success. •Happiness is the highest level of success. •I believe that true success can be achieved only if one is satisfied from within. •Without happiness and inner peace, all your money, laurels, education, job have no meaning.
  • 27.
  • 28. C o n c l u s i o n
  • 29. • In conclusion we can see that both- success and happiness are essential for a person. They are definitely complimentary to each other. • One would rarely find an unsuccessful man experiencing happiness while a happy person not experiencing success. • Though people may say that one does not really need to be successful in order to be happy, if we analyse the situation carefully we will find that he is actually successful. • Success can be something as achieving the most simplest of things.
  • 30. EXAMPLES: • For a baby success can be something as simple as standing up without support, throwing a ball, picking an object etc. • They say some people who are poor are among the happiest. Well, in their case they too are successful???
  • 31. • Success too is important for a person, however it must be noted that success and happiness go hand in hand. Being successful means the person is happy. • One is successful only when one is happy, else all efforts are futile and that person is actually unsuccessful even though his achievements may be numerous. You can have a high achieving person, but that by no means say that he is successful. • In order for him to be truly successful he has to make sure that his achievements are making him happy. Unless he is happy, he is unfortunately just a high achieving unsuccessful person.
  • 32. • If we can stop looking at success as a measure of a person’s importance, wealth, qualifications, achievements etc, we will find that being successful is to be happy. • In Wall Street lawyers are slogging everyday, running the clocks, maintaining more than 100 hours a week, We say they are successful simply because they are learned, earning a handsome package and are working in some prestigious law firm. • However if you read a bit of John Grisham, you will clearly see that it is definitely not the case. They are actually very unhappy despite being “Successful”.
  • 33. • Thus in conclusion we can safely say that both success and happiness are required in today’s world as one is quite useless without the other. • “You are happy only when you are successful and you are successful only when you are happy”. ~
