Motivation research aims to understand the underlying wants, needs, and drives that influence consumer behavior by looking beyond the surface level reasons consumers provide for their purchases. It seeks to uncover consumers' attitudes, assumptions, sensations, images, and motives. Various techniques are used including structured questions, physiological tests, word association tests, and story completion tests. However, motivation research has limitations and requires experienced researchers to administer techniques properly and draw conclusions from small sample sizes.
