It is a fictional narrative in prose
that can be read in one sitting.

ELEMENTS OF
SHORT STORY
1. Characters- representation of
human being; persons involved
in conflict.
TYPES
Round Character- dynamic
character/changing; fully developed
character
Flat Character- stereotype
character who does not grow and
develop.
Protagonist- hero/heroine
Antagonist- foil to protagonist
Deuterogamist- second in
importance
Fringe- one who is destroyed by
inner conflict
2. Setting- the locale and period in
which the events occur
3. Conflict- the struggle of complication
involving the characters/ opposition
TYPES
Internal Conflict- protagonist
struggle within himself
Interpersonal Conflict- person
against person
External Conflict-
person against
society
4. Plot- causally related sequence of
events; happens as a result of main
conflict
- blueprint or skeleton of the
story
NARRATIVE ORDER- sequence of
events

Expositon (beginning)- introduces
time and place, setting, and the
main characters
Complication (rising action)- unfolds
struggles that would be

knots, solved. Downward

the story
