• Most successful teams comprise of a
restorative dentist and an implant surgeon
• Key factors to look for a successful team is
experience and reputation!
5. The Successful Dental Team
• Getting to know your new dental team
– For most cases, the most successful team is made of
two dentists: a restorative dentist and an oral/
maxillofacial surgeon
– The restorative dentist develop mastery on making
the implant supported crowns, bridges, or dentures
– The surgeon’s specialty and expertise allow him to
properly develop the implant site and surgically place

7. Step 2
Planning for a Successful Result
• The restorative dentist and implant surgeon must
collaborate to get all the information needed for a
successful result.
• Proper information means obtaining a comprehensive
exam, getting x-rays, getting study models, and even
getting 3 D imaging.
• Once the information is obtained, a successful
treatment plan is made by the team.

11. Step 3
Building the Bone Foundation
• After extraction of a tooth, healing often
becomes unpredictable. Bone often heals
improperly, leaving a defect.
• Boney defects must be corrected prior to
placement of an implant.
• Bone grafting is performed by the surgeon to
either prevent or correct a bone defect.

15. Step 4 Precise Implant Placement
• Implants should be
properly positioned in
all dimension: height,
width, angulation and
depth.
• Implants that are placed
improperly can cause
serious issues
inesthetics and
function.
17. Step 5 Gum Development
• Gum development after
implant placement is
important to allow
normal architecture of
gums to create an
esthetic result with the
crown.
18. Gums around implants
• For implants in the
“smile zone” the gum
tissue must be shaped
by a healing abutment
or a temporary crown.
19. Gum Grafting
• For gums that do have the
necessary contour or shape,
gum grafting is needed prior
to placement of the final
crown.
21. Single Unit Crown
• Use of custom
abutments allow the
proper contour for a
healthy and natural
gum line to the tooth.
22. Multi Unit Prostheses
• The smile line, gum
thickness and shape are
all considered for an
esthetic appearance.
For multi-unit
prostheses, the
restorative dentist must
use metal or ceramic
extensions to support
the prostheses.
