From the audited Financial statements of the City of Pickering
Public Library Board, December 31, 2016.
Dear Pickering Residents:
For several years, the Library Board has
informed the community that the expansion of
the Central Library is overdue. Our growing
community not only needs a bigger library, they
need a Library that will meet the needs of the
next generation of Pickering residents.
The next generation reads, thinks, and learns
differently, so a library that will meet their needs
must be different. A library that: lends more
than books; facilitates individual and group
productivity, through services such as
Makerspaces; supports the development of 21st
century competencies; and provides inspiring
public space that brings residents of all
backgrounds together.
Our excellent library staff have strived to bring
elements of innovation into our library system with
limited funding – such as our new reading garden, our
collaboration rooms, and technology programming for
all ages, but this is not enough. The Library Board has
seen examples of well supported libraries around the
world that have transformed and energized their
communities. Our community and the next generation
of library users deserve such a library. The Library
Board is advocating on your behalf, to make it happen.
Sincerely,
John Sabean,
Pickering Library Board Chair

“I think it is safe to say that the
more skilled workers and
educated people there are in
your community, city, province,
country, the better off we are. A
public Library such as Pickering
Public Library and resources it
has available to the community
is playing a big role in improving
our community.”
