Recognizing drug addiction signs
1. Recognizing Drug Addiction Signs
Drugs ruin more than just our favorite movies.
You’d think that all the attention these celebrity
drug-induced deaths have caused, that people
would stop experimenting with drugs and avoid that
whole, awful lifestyle completely.
But, unfortunately, it just doesn’t work that way.
People looking for a buzz or an escape rarely TRULY
understand what they are getting themselves into.
They think, “Addictions are for other people. I am in
control.” Nice try – addictions will capture anyone who dips their toes in the drug pond.
If you are afraid that maybe a loved one has already breached the line, here are some signs that can
help you confirm their addiction:
Changes in Appearance
Some of the most noticeable indications are changes in appearance.
First, personal hygiene may take a dive. Someone who is normally clean and well-dressed may take a
turn towards the pig pen. Their clothing style may change dramatically, and they may take less notice or
care over their hair, makeup, or hygiene.
Second, drugs often affect weight. A sudden loss or gain in weight could indicate a drug addiction.
Alone, weight change isn’t much of an indicator, but when combined with some of these other changes,
it could be very telling.
Third, a person who is abusing drugs will suffer physically from the addiction. Most commonly, eyes
become blood-shot and pupils are dilated. In some instances, you may see skin discoloration, unusual
injuries/cuts, frequent nose bleeds, puffy faces, and injection marks. They may also suffer from tremors,
censures, itching, or sniffling.
Changes in Behavior
Basically, any extreme behavioral change in any
direction may be an indicator of drug addiction.
This could be excessive carelessness, anger,
mood swings, depression, euphoria, oversensitivity, and so on.
These mood swings/alterations will usually lead
to self-isolation and a degradation of
relationships. This includes family relationships,
2. friendships, and professional relationships. It is not uncommon for them to start skipping school or
work, being late or keeping odd schedules.
Another consequence of these behavioral changes is a lack of interest in things that they used to really
enjoy. Once the drug takes top tier on the survival pyramid, nothing else will matter except getting the
next fix.
This could lead them to steal, lie, lock themselves in their rooms, and avoid conversations about their
behaviors.
Object Indications
One of the most obvious drug abuse signs is finding
physical evidence of drug use. Many drugs require tools
for consumption – needles, burnt spoons, rolled paper,
razors, broken glass, pipes, lighters, and so on. If you find
any of these, there is a very good chance that drug abuse is
happening.
Getting Help
If you are certain that a loved one is abusing drugs, you must get them help. It will mostly likely be a
painful and difficult process both physically, mentally, and emotionally for everyone involved. There are
professional organizations that are prepared to help drug abusers and their families overcome the
negative effects of drug addiction.
