Welcome!
Thank you for deciding to take a look at the WebCarbon Calculator and being curious to know what is
behind the idea.
On the following pages you will find more information about the idea, development, milestones,
backgrounds but also solutions and goals for the future.
3. 3
The Background!
In the near future, new technologies will increase our electricity demand worldwide.
Currently, 58.8% of the world's population has access to the Internet, the remaining 41.2% will follow in
the coming years, and by improving living conditions and economies in emerging markets, more people
will use digital services.
This is a problem, as the IT sector is responsible for 4% of the world's emissions, the main problem is
the streaming of data, YouTube, Spotify, Netflix, and many more are among the most used services in
the world where information is delivered on demand of the user.
It is not a question of abolishing the Internet offers, but of optimizing them technically in such a way that
the footprint caused by each individual can be reduced.
In order to draw attention to this problem and to establish solutions to reduce the digital footprint, I have
started work on the WebCarbon Calculator.
4. 4
The Idea!
The solution is quite simple: calculate the carbon footprint based on the energy consumption caused by
the data.
This is basically the idea behind it.
The data centers will not need less energy in the next few years, they will become more efficient, but
the computing power needed will increase.
The energy required for storing data can be controlled by the provider, but the transmission path is
excluded from this control, data never takes the direct route from one side of the world to the client, but
passes through various intermediate stations on the way and this process requires energy.
The energy consumption per gigabyte of data can be converted into CO2.

Milestone 2 / 06.2020
Commercialization
Milestone 3 / 09.2020
Commercialization of the
project, offer for companies to
prove their ability to reduce
emissions.
Consulting for companies to
optimize IT and solutions to
reduce the carbon footprint of
IT and save costs in the long
run.
Currently the interest in the
WebCarbon Calculator is low
outside Germany, the goal is
to get more than 500 users
per month from all over the
world
The following functions are to
come: Find the low co2
footprint solution for digital
behavior, track your CO2
footprint with Chrome
Extension, etc.

About me
I am the developer behind WebCarborn Calculator. My name is Petr Kirpeit, I am an entrepreneur,
project manager and web developer by passion. I developed the WebCarbon Calculator because I was
curious and wanted to know what amount of CO2 is produced. My goal is not to make the Internet bad,
but to work together on solutions to use resources and computing power more effectively.
