  6. The New Normal? In this era of COVID, we’ve been spending a lot of time discussion how to stream meetings/services to remote participants. When social distancing restrictions are lifted we’re likely to have both local (in-room) participants as well as remote participants. If all we’re doing is broadcasting (1-way), this is no problem. ● But what if you want interactivity? ● How do you include remote participants in an interactive large class, workshop or church service?
  7. Let’s upgrade this technology setup. Everybody starts somewhere
  8. What have we found? Many have discovered during COVID that our community is much larger and more far-flung than we ever knew, so we feel the need to keep everyone included even when most of us can meet face-to-face. But how to do this? It introduces a number of issues that are more complex than having a 100% distributed church service.

PTZOptics USB Camera Laptop / Zoom Mixed audio to camera’s audio-in port USB carrying audio & video ethernet Laptop/Zoom sees PTZOptics camera as a USB webcam. Audio and video are in sync since mixed audio is routed through camera. Base configuration – Audio 🡺 USB Camera 🡺 Laptop 🡺 Zoom
  20. Mic sources (voice, instruments) Recorded sources (CD, MP3) Mixer Amplifier Speakers Digital Recorder . . . PTZOptics USB Camera Laptop / Zoom / OBS Mixed audio to camera’s audio-in port USB carrying audio & video ethernetGigabit switch This introduces an ethernet (IP) connection between camera and laptop, through a switch, in addition to the USB connection. Benefits: • Laptop can control camera with PTZOptics controller over IP connection • Laptop (with OBS) can capture synchronized IP audio and video for high quality recording independent of Zoom broadcasting. (Note: Zoom and OBS can’t access the USB video stream concurrently, hence the value of parallel USB and IP streams) • So…Zoom uses USB; OBS and camera controller use IP. ethernet ethernet Add ethernet for recording and camera control
  21. Mic sources (voice, instruments) Recorded sources (CD, MP3) Mixer Amplifier Speakers Digital Recorder . . . PTZOptics USB Camera Laptop / Zoom / OBS Mixed audio to camera’s audio-in port ethernetGigabit switch Ditching the USB can be accomplished. Need to install OBS Virtualcam plug-in which becomes a source for Zoom, replacing the USB webcam. Benefit: You can use OBS to manipulate the video, e.g. mix various sources/scenes before it goes out to Zoom. Drawbacks: Apparent (~ 1 second) latency for video crew; if OBS crashes or hangs, so does your Zoom production. Data flow: Camera 🡺 OBS Media Source 🡺 OBS Virtual Camera 🡺 Zoom ethernet ethernet USB carrying audio & video Option: Remove USB entirely
  22. Mixed audio to camera’s audio-in port Mic sources (voice, instruments) Recorded sources (CD, MP3) Mixer Amplifier Speakers Digital Recorder . . . PTZOptics USB Camera Laptop / Zoom USB carrying audio & video ethernet Back to the simple diagram, but now we have Zoom audio from remote participants coming into the mixing board for amplification into the room (heavy red line). Potential for a feedback loop (thin red line). Our solution is … on the mixer, do NOT mix the laptop-in channel into the mix bus that’s feeding the audio-out to the camera. Thus, the audio signal going to the camera (and back out to Zoom) does not include the audio coming in from Zoom. Add remote participant interaction and amplification into the in-room audio
  23. Mic sources (voice, instruments) Recorded sources (CD, MP3) Amplifier Speaker s Digital Recorder . . . PTZOptics USB Camera Laptop / Zoom audio source All audio sources come into bus 1. All audio sources except laptop also come into bus 2. Bus 1 mix out goes to amps/speakers and recorder. Bus 2 mix out goes to PTZOptics camera, and onward to laptop & zoom. Feedback loop (laptop-out to laptop-in eliminated.) mixer bus 1 bus 2 Laptop / Zoom Mixing bus detail
  24. Tips: 1. Mute Zoom Audio Input Until Necessary 2. Have Zoom moderator mute all participants until necessary 3. Test to see if you need to mute live microphones to avoid a feedback loop.
