News 20120107 storm
1. News January 7th, 2012
The storm caused wind turbines to
produce as a reactor in Cernavodă
The amount of electricity produced by wind power reached Saturday
to overcome a reactor at Cernavodă (706 MW). This is due to strong
winds.

According to National Energy System data presented on the website of Transelectrica, Saturday,
around noon, there was the largest
amount of electricity produced by
wind, 714 MW, i.e. 10.72% of total
energy (6,660 MW).
The 1,000 wind turbines in Romania
managed to beat, on Saturday,
production capacity of a reactor at
Cernavodă. That's because wind blew
with tremendous force. Thus, the energy produced would be sufficient to supply a city with 200,000
homes. Most wind turbines are located in Dobrogea, over 500. On January 7, they revolved at a
breakneck speed. Maximum of 731 megawatts per hour was recorded at 9:30 in the morning.
It’s a real record considering that in a typical day, when the wind blows with 7-8 m/s, wind turbines
can produce 150-250 MWh, which is 3 times less than the value recorded on Saturday.
Green energy produced by wind would be enough for a big city like Constanţa and Iaşi. In Romania,
are installed in more than a 1,000 currently producing 3% of total energy. Investors in this area
want to double the number of turbines by the end of 2012.
Since Hidroelectrica is low on water, wind energy was a perfect match. It can be seen on the above
figure that 19 nights since December Hidroelectrica stopped producing hinge capacity in the 00:00
– 07:00 interval and kept its water for day prices on the day ahead market. The following thing
happened: Hidroelectrica kept its water reserve for the day prices and wind energy took the place
for the night production. I think Hidroelectrica fount its pair.
As can be seen in the chart, wind energy production has exceeded hydropower production in the
time slot of 2-10 pm. The largest amount of energy was produced in coal power plants that provide
currently about 40% of national energy consumption.
National Meteorology Administration (ANM) announced today a warning for strong winds,
especially in southern counties of Romania.
