MEERUT: This Diwali is going to be special for 35-year-old Varisa, a resident
of Ghunghrala village near Hapur in western Uttar Pradesh. Having lost her
eyesight in a freak accident around five years ago, the festival of lights meant
nothing more than an ‘all sound’ show for her. Not anymore.

This year, Varisa is going to see festivities unfold before her, courtesy
Hindustan’s ‘Naino Ke Deep Jalao’ campaign – which has helped restore
eyesight of nearly 62 people.
Like several others, Varisa came to know about the novel campaign last year.
That’s when she got in touch with the medical college authorities where eye
surgery was performed on her on August 11.
“I am eagerly waiting for the festival of lights. I want to see my city bathed in
lights on Diwali,” she said with tears in her eyes.
Like her, Yashpal, a resident of Janak Nagar of Saharanpur too had lost his
eyesight and all hopes of recovering it too. The Hindustan campaign helped
restore his eyesight. Angoori Devi of Lavad who too had lost her vision found
it back through the ‘Naino ke Deep Jalao’ campaign.

The six-day Hindustan campaign also helped in inspiring many to
pledge their eyes. A dedicated team of doctors were busy transplanting
corneas in eye bank of Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical
College, Meerut, and in other locations like Roshni Eye Bank in
Saharanpur.
Many social organisations, which included Rotary clubs, Lions clubs,
along with some individuals have been creating awareness for eye
donation for years. This was further accelerated after Hindustan joined
them with its campaign.

“The media participation (Hindustan campaign) brought different
sections of the society on a common platform which helped in stirring
the campaign for eye donation,” said Dr Ashok Jain, head of Roshni Eye
Bank in Saharanpur. The bank also received 750 registration forms in a
span of one month after the campaign.
In Meerut, Dr Sandeep Mittal, senior eye surgeon and former principal
of LLRM Medical College, admitted that the campaign increased
awareness and people are now coming forward to donate eyes.
