Doctors at Safdarjung hospital recently reattached the severed hand of a
factory worker from Sonipat, Haryana.The patient, Virendra Mondal, worked
at a steel utensil factory. His job mainly involved cutting steel sheets and
designing them in shapes.Mondal was at work when the incident took place.
His colleagues managed to bring him and the severed limb to a hospital in
time, making the surgery possible. “The 11-hour surgery involved repairing
of 15 tendons, two nerves, arteries and veins. Fixation of bones was also
required,“ said Dr Rakesh Kain, associate professor, plastic surgery at
Safdarjung hospital.
Mondal was first taken to ESI hospital in Rohini but the doctors there
referred him to Safdarjung hospital.
“The patient came to us at midnight. He was still bleeding profusely and his
co-workers had wrapped the severed hand to the wrist with a cloth.We
cleaned the wounds and began operating around 1am,“ said Dr Kain.
