2. What affects climate?
๏ฎ Climate in an area is affected by two
main things
โข Direct sunlight (heat)
โข Precipitation
๏ฎ Climate directly affects the type of
biome
โข Biome is an environment with specific
vegetation and organisms
โข If it is cold, you have organisms that are
suitable to the ____
3. Biomes
๏ฎ Because of these two factors
combined, we get specific biomes at
specific areas.
๏ฎ For example, at the equator, there is
a lot of sunlight, and a lot of
precipitation, so there is a tropical
rainforest.
๏ฎ At 30ยฐ, there is a lot of sunlight, but
little or no precipitation, so there is a
desert.
4. Overview
๏ฎ Sunlight and precipitation affect the
climate
๏ฎ Climate over an environment
produces a biome
๏ฎ A biome has organisms suited to the
climate
๏ฎ Biomes generally occur on the same
latitudes
5. Biomes
๏ฎ There are two main types of biomes
โข Land
โข Aquatic (water)
๏ฎ We will cover both today
6. Land Biomes
๏ฎ Most land biomes are named after
their climax community.
๏ฎ Some of the land biomes
โข Tundra
โข Taiga (TIGH-guh)
โข Temperate deciduous forest
โข Grassland
โข Tropical rain forest
โข Desert
8. Aquatic biomes
๏ฎ There are 3 main types of aquatic
biomes.
๏ฎ The amount of salt determines the
type of biome.
๏ฎ The 3 main types of aquatic biomes
โข Freshwater
โข Marine (saltwater)
โข Estuaries
9. Tundra
๏ฎ Tundra
โข Located near the poles
โข Treeless biome covered by moss,
lichens, and grasses
โข Permafrost โ a layer of permanently
frozen subsoil
10.
11. Taiga (Boreal Forest)
๏ฎ Taiga
โข Covered by coniferous (cone bearing)
trees.
โข Bears, wolves, moose, elk are some of
the typical animals
๏ฎ Coniferous Forest
12.
13.
14. Temperate Biomes
๏ฎ Temperate climates characterized by
cold winters and hot summers
โข Plants change during the seasons
(leaves change color)
๏ฎ Deciduous Forest, Woodland &
Shrubland, Grassland
20. Tropical Rain/Dry Forest
๏ฎ Tropical rain forest
โข Located at equator
โข Receive 200-400 centimeters of rain a
year
โข Constant temperature.
โข Home of the most types of animals than
any other biome. Many colorful
๏ฎ Dry forest: less precipitation
21.
22.
23. Deserts
๏ฎ Deserts
โข Located at 30ยฐ latitude
โข Less than 25 cm of rain falls a year
โข Both plants and animals must be able to
retain moisture.
โข Birds, lizards, snakes, insects are typical
โข Cactus and sagebrush sparsely cover
the area
29. Marine Biomes
๏ฎ Includes all of the ocean
๏ฎ Marine biomes are divided into 4
subcategories
โข Intertidal zone
โข Neritic zone
โข Open-sea zone
โข Deep-sea zone

32.
33. Estuaries
๏ฎ Estuaries are the boundaries
between freshwater and saltwater.
๏ฎ Since it is a mix of the two, a variety
of organisms can be supported.
๏ฎ Examples of estuaries
โข Delta, swamp, lagoon
34.
35.
36. Biome Project
๏ฎ In groups of 3-4, create a biome presentation
๏ฎ Give information about the biome, including:
โข Temperature range (graph)
โข Precipitation (graph)
โข Location (latitudes/areas)
โข Plants (vegetation)
โข Animals
โข Interesting Facts
๏ฎ Posterboard or Powerpoint acceptable
๏ฎ More visuals, the better
๏ฎ 500000000 points
๏ฎ Due in two weeks!
