to design and deliver financial
services and products
Banks, Insurers and other
financial institutions are

Start-ups are using it

5. CREDIT CARD
A credit card is a payment card issued to
users (cardholders) to enable the
cardholder to pay a merchant for goods
and services based on the cardholder's
promise to the card issuer to pay them
for the amounts so paid plus the other
agreed charges. The card issuer (usually
a bank) creates a revolving account and
grants a line of credit to the cardholder,
from which the cardholder can borrow
money for payment to a merchant or as
a cash advance. In other words, credit
cards combine payment services with
extensions of credit.
6. Complex fee structures in the credit card
industry may limit customers' ability to
comparison shop, help ensure that the
industry is not price-competitive and help
maximize industry profits. Because of this,
legislatures have regulated credit card fees.
A credit card is different from
a charge card, where it requires the balance
to be repaid in full each month. In contrast,
credit cards allow the consumers a
continuing balance of debt, subject
to interest being charged.
7. A credit card also differs
from a cash card, which
can be used like currency
by the owner of the card.
A credit card differs from a
charge card also in that a
credit card typically
involves a third-party
entity that pays the seller
and is reimbursed by the
buyer, whereas a charge
card simply defers
payment by the buyer
until a later date

funding, in 2015, Paytm
became the first Indian

funding from Chinese
ecommerce
company Alibaba, after it
raised over $625 million
at a valuation of $1.5
billion. The Alibaba
Group was the biggest
stakeholder in Paytm
parent company One97
Communications
10. Paytm was founded and incubated by One97
Communications Limited in 2010 as a prepaid
mobile recharge website. In an interview, its
founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma related how he
was inspired during a visit to China when he
saw vegetable vendors using their mobile
phones to receive payments from some
customers

world measured by revenue and market

downloads/streaming, audiobook

12. Amazon also sells certain low-end products like
USB cables under its in-house brand Amazon
Basics. Amazon has separate retail websites for
the United States, the United Kingdom and
Ireland, France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain,
Netherlands, Australia, Brazil, Japan, China,

other countries for some of its products.
In 2015, Amazon surpassed Walmart as the
most valuable retailer in the United States by
market capitalization. Amazon is the fourth
most valuable public company in the world,
the largest Internet company by revenue in the
world, and the eighth largest employer in the
United States.
13. In 2017, Amazon acquired Whole
Foods Market for $13.4 billion,
which vastly increased Amazon's
presence as a physical retailer.
The acquisition was interpreted by some as a
direct attempt to challenge Walmart and their
brick-and-mortar stores
14. ONLINE BANKING
Online banking, also known
as internet banking, e-
banking or virtual banking, is
an electronic payment
system that enables
customers of a bank or
other financial institution to
conduct a range of financial
transactions through the
financial institution's website.
15. Customer numbers are normally not the same as account numbers, because a number of customer accounts
can be linked to the one customer number. Technically, the customer number can be linked to any account with
the financial institution that the customer controls, though the financial institution may limit the range of
accounts that may be accessed to, say, cheque, savings, loan, credit card and similar accounts. The customer
visits the financial institution's secure website, and enters the online banking facility using the customer
number and credentials previously set up. The types of financial transactions which a customer may transact
through online banking are determined by the financial institution, but usually includes obtaining account
balances, a list of the recent transactions, electronic bill payments and funds transfers between a customer's or
another's accounts.
Most banks also enable
a customer to
download copies of
bank statements, which
can be printed at the
customer's premises
(some banks charge a
fee for mailing hard
copies of bank
statements).
16. The online banking system will typically connect to or be part of the core banking system operated by
a bank and is in contrast to branch banking which was the traditional way customers accessed
banking services. To access a financial institution's online banking facility, a customer with internet
access will need to register with the institution for the service, and set up a password and
other credentials for customer verification. The credentials for online banking is normally not the
same as for telephone or mobile banking.
18. NFC
Near Field Communication
Near Field Communication – NFC payment apps are widely used today in the retail
industry. NFC is simply a method of contactless communication of data between devices
in close proximity and this technology has already been adopted in Europe, Asia and
gaining popularity in North America. The NFC technology provides a secure architecture
and compatible framework for application vendors to harness the technology for mobile
payment capabilities (e.g. peer-to-peer money exchange).
19. SOME APPLICATIONS OF NFC
SQUARE WALLET
Square wallet is one of the widely used
mobile wallet app, available on iOS and
Android. You can easily link your credit card
to the app, but instead of paying directly with
the credit card, it requires the use of
merchant cards which is why Square works
only with its own list of merchants. As it is
location based, the store easily knows that
you’re ordering something and will charge it
to the card linked on your Square account.
It features Hands-Free Checkout as well
where you ‘favorite’ the merchant and all you
have to do is say your name at checkout. As
you visit these stores, you can also earn
rewards and discounts on your next visit.
20. SAMSUNG PAY
Samsung Pay is a mobile
payment and digital wallet service
by Samsung Electronics that lets
users make payments using
compatible phones and other
Samsung-produced devices. The
service supports contactless
payments using near-field
communications, but also
incorporates magnetic secure
transmission that allows contactless
payments to be used on payment
terminals that only support magnetic
stripe and normal contactless cards.
21. GOOGLE WALLET
A secure mobile wallet app for credit card
information and facilitating NFC transactions.
Instead of tapping your credit card on the NFC
machine at the checkout counter, all you have
to do is wave your smartphone or tap it on
the machine to make your payments. It’ll be
able to identify the credit card information
linked on your Google account.
Link your debit or credit card to your Google
account and you can leave your wallet at
home – but at the moment, it only works with
phones and credit cards from the US and only
in the US. Currently, it supports 20+
merchants on the ground and online,
promising more merchants to come.
22. VISA PAYWAVE
A contactless payment service. Visa payWave is a convenient NFC mobile payment
app that lets you pay with your card or mobile device by simply waving it over a secure
reader instead of inserting or swiping your card. The payment process will be
authorized, processed and billed in a secure way. All you need to do is check that your
bank is participating in Visa payWave for mobile and that you have downloaded the NFC
payment app to your phone, wave it and go.
23. PAYPAL
A “bump” method to transfer money or make payments between users.
Paypal is another famous NFC mobile payment service that can send
money between other PayPal users and friends. Available for both iOS and
Android, you can easily send money to other users just like you would on
the PayPal website. It also allows you to view your past transactions in
detail. PayPal is also entering mobile payments via a card reader with the
PayPal Here app.
