Before smartphones, we had a 12-second attention span. Not anymore. Now it is 8 seconds.

So, wherever our laptops or cell phones are these days (24/7) is where we work.
Today, 60% of employees work after normal business hours. And most people – two-thirds of us – do some work from home, in addition to the office.

We love information and we want to do more with it. We want immediacy of information in real-time.
Whether it’s driving to work in the morning and wanting to know the fastest path to our destination…
Or if it’s taking great photos and wanting to immediately share them with our friends or to the world.
We are generating so much information these days that 90% of the world’s data has been created in the last two years.
This growth has been primarily driven by the exponential increase in the use of mobile devices.
And with IoT rapidly growing in interest, the data deluge is gaining strength at an alarming rate with no signs of stopping.

Yet, some of this change is scary—we are at more risk than ever before because we are more connected.
Last year(2016), 1.1 billion identities were exposed as the result of data breaches and the number of attacks doubles every 15 months.
We must safeguard technology to keep our personal/business information secure from people who may want to harm us.
What’s more, while we protect our information, it must be highly available, even in the event of a catastrophic disaster.

Despite all the user demands and expectations, especially with Millennials increasingly entering the workforce, some IT organizations still try and hold on to their assets as long as they possibly can.
According to Intel estimates, there are more than 500MM PCs over 4 years old in the work environment. While this is a huge productivity loss for end-users, it’s also a productivity drain for IT. We know that support costs increase at Year 3.
49% of ITDM say repair costs and maintenance of older devices are higher than new PCs
47% of ITDMs say they are challenged by problems and disruptions due to the unreliability of older devices
46% of ITDMs say older PCs are more vulnerable to security breaches
Outside domain – IT lose control of securing devices and data
Older systems cost more to maintain, are harder to secure and most importantly, they decrease productivity because of downtime and slow and glitchy performance. This isn’t productive for anyone.

Ultimately, this is about balancing costs with organizational productivity. Which means productivity for the end users and IT. While IT has always been measured on cost (98%). Almost a quarter are now also being measured on user experience. And this is likely to grow.
So this is the core challenge – how do you balance the reality of cost with end user productivity and happiness.
And as user demand continues, which it will, and IT allows more diversity and more devices into their environment – security threats, manageability hassles and cost pressures will only continue to grow, creating more tension between user experience and the budget.
