Robert's Jealousy Over Bingo the Dog
1. Robert and the Dog

2. Setting in Place/Time:
Setting in Place: The story takes place in Africa, Nigeria which was a poor country,
in which the society was divided into 2, there where the rich people and the ones
that were very poor.
Setting in Time: In that time there were social problems. They came to Africa for
work. And did not help the society of Africa knowing that they were having serious
problems of economy.
4. Robert:
He is the employee of the doctor, and work as a housekeeper.
He lived in a hovel at “the jungle”in very bad conditions, had 6
childrens and a woman. Roberts family didn’t had food to eat
and the children had a distended stomach.
His economic situation was extremely poor. At this moment
were rich people or very poor people, middle class does not
existed. Also Robert was black and that influenced a lot,
because black people was bad trated and were in poor class.
5. The doctor:
Was the employer and lived in a mansion with his woman
and Bingo ( the dog), and just arrived from abroad. he was
cheerful and polite. He treated Robert very well and this
wasn't so common because black people was treated as
slaves.
6. Woman:
She was the doctors woman, was young and cheerful. Was an
european woman and it was the first time she was going to
Africa, and spent the day asking Robert about African food and
lending help to him. The woman brought Bingo with her.
7. Bingo:
Was the couple's dog. Bingo was treated like a human being or
even better. He had a lot of attention and eat sophisticated food
as tinned milk, slept on a settee, was brushed and cleaned and
was taken to doctor. At the end of the story he died because of
Roberts jealousy and anger.
8. PLOT
The story is about a poor man called Robert who lived in a Jungle with his wife
and 6 children, and was an employee of a rich and young medical doctor. He was
happy working as a steward on a mansion due to there he was well payed. It was
all wonderful until the doctor announced that his wife was going to join him, and
she was not going to arrive alone, she had a particular dog, called Bingo. Bingo
was not a common dog, he was treated as a person due to he slept on a settee and
it was feeded with expensive and humans food. One day, the doctor and his wife
asked Robert if he could take care of the mansion, and the dog, Bingo because
they were going on a trip. He obviously accepted, but as time passed he started
hating Bingo, due to the fact he had to serve and treat him as it was a human
being, so at the third day he tethered the dog to its settee, robbed his food and
returned to his home to share it with his family.
9. Question: Who born dog?
In this question Robert is referring to who was the lucky one to has Bingos life,
because he lived in a better conditions than his family and he couldn't believe that a
dog had a better life than he had. With this question we can see that Robert wants
to be the dog to had an amazing life and be good attended. He could not stand that
Bingo slept on a settee and his children slept on mug, and that his children had
distended stomachs while a dog eat tinned food. In this situation humans behave like
animals and animals had characteristics of humans.
10. Vocabulary
Exuberant: Very energetic.
Household: A group of people, often a family, who live together.
Bachelor: A man who has never married.
Dismissals: The situation in which an employer officially makes someone leave their
job.
Curtailment: To stop something before it is finished.
11. More Vocabulary
Mangy: It is an infectious disease in hairy animals, that makes hair fall out and
causes areas of rough skin.
Settee: A long soft seat, with a back and usually with arms.
Wagged: When something moves from side to side, or up and down quickly and
repeatedly.
Tethered: To join or connect something to another thing.
12. Roberts Feelings:
Beginning of the story: He is happy, because the nice trate of their boos, and because
of the money he gets.
Middle and Ending of the story: When the dog arrives he gets jealous and angry
because he can not stand how a dog can be more important than him, and why is
treat as a person. His feeling starts to grow thru the story.
14. Point Of View
The story is written on a 3rd person omniscient. This means
that there is like a “person” who knows everything of the
story, and narrates it at the same time.
15. End:
At the end the couple tells Robert that they will be going on holidays for 6 weeks
and ask him if he could stay with Bingo at their house, and they will leave money for
the dogs food so he had to buy it. Robert accepted and on the third day he get upset
of the situation, tied Bingo to the sofa and went with all the food that was for the
dog and give it to his children. In one hand he didn't do it for the dog to die, but he
was in a desperation and needed to eat. But on the other hand he felt jealous and
want to take revenge, so he did it with Bingo. Finally the dog died of starvation and
Robert gave the food to his children.
