SOUNDS GREEK AND LATIN
TO YOU?LASER HAIR REMOVAL
INTRODUCTION

4. Don’t worry; you are not the
only one. There are many who
are not aware of this amazing
cosmetic procedure that
removes unwanted body and
facial hair forever.
Laser hair removal is not new; the aesthetic procedure has a history of more than five
decades behind it.
Hair can be removed from most of the body parts, including the face, legs, arms, under-
arms, bottom, back, bikini line etc. The procedure is incredibly precise and fast, so even
on sensitive parts of the body the laser can zap the hair away in minutes without affecting
the skin.
LASER HAIR REMOVAL SOUNDS INTERESTING, RIGHT!

5. Hair anatomy reveals three layers in hair:
the outer cuticle, the mid cortex and the
inner medulla. The Cuticle offers strength &
flexibility to the hair structure while the
innermost part of the hair i.e the medulla is
the channel of nutrients. The medul.la is the
layer which reacts to hair and aids in de-
struction of the hair follicle.
It’s very essential to know
about the hair structure
before opting for removing it
because you can defeat the
enemy only when you know it
better.

6. We love hair on the head but not on body. The trend of removing hair has been there
since time immemorial. There are a number of reasons for getting unwanted hair
removed; it can be to look beautiful, to meet cultural demand, for medical requirements
or for religious sentiments.
There are several ways to remove unwanted hair and every method is unique with
varied results.
Methods

7. Shaving:
This is probably the most used and cheapest method of hair
removal. However there is risk of irritation, ingrown hairs or
razor bumps and the most annoying thing about shaving is
that it has to be done every day to keep you hair-free.
Waxing:
Waxing is one of the most popular methods of hair removal,
as it can be done for large areas like legs, hands, chest, back
and bikini. The procedure involves hairs being pulled out
from body parts with aid of hot or cold wax. Though the
results can last for a month the procedure can be quite pain-
ful. Waxing can result in the formation of irritant folliculits
wherein red, itchy bumps appear on the affected areas
around the hair follicles .These bumps can leave behind
unsightly black marks.
Threading:
This is an ancient technique of hair removal but the technique
can be done only for smaller body parts like eyebrows, upper
lip or chin. It is a temporary method which requires mainte-
nance every 10 to 15 days and can be painful.

8. Electrolysis:
Electrolysis is a painful way of removing unwanted hair from
face and body but the results last longer than other methods.
During the procedure, a very fine probe is inserted into the hair
follicle and is then removed with tweezers. This process is ex-
tremely painful and each and every follicle needs individual
treatment, so the process is quite time-consuming.
Laser Hair Removal:
Laser hair removal is a convenient method for permanently
reducing or removing unwanted facial or body hair. The pro-
cedure is extremely fast and precise and can work on any
body part in minutes. .
Hair Removal Creams:
This method of hair removal is painless. The creams are
made up of chemicals that dissolve the hair at the roots. How-
ever, the effects of this is last for 15 to 30 days maximum and
the procedure can be quite messy; not to forget hair removal
creams can smell bad.
06
9. Conventional Methods
VS
Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is convenient and
effective when compared to the conven-
tional methods like threading, shaving,
waxing, electrolysis or hair removal
creams. Every conventional method tends
to have some sort of discomfort associat-
ed with them; be it pain, cumbersome or
not so impressive results. However the
most important concern with all the con-
ventional methods of hair removal is that
they are temporary with results lasting not
more than 15-30 days.
07
10. THE BENEFITS OF LASER HAIR
REMOVAL ARE MANY WHEN
COMPARED TO THE TRADITION-
AL CONVENTIONAL METHODS.
SOME OF THEM ARE:
It’s permanent. . Normally, a person would require 6 to 8 sessions of treat-
ment to get optimum results. The procedure of hair reduction is virtually pain
free.
Candidates undergoing the procedure experience a feel of rubber snapping
against the skin. The pain is much less when compared to the likes of waxing
and epilators.
Laser hair removal can treat any part of
the body that has unwanted hair. The
most treated areas are face, legs, bikini,
hands, underarms, back, shoulders, chest
and abdomen.
The procedure of reducing hair with laser
is precise as it can selectively target the
hairs leaving the surrounding skin undam-
aged. Beard shaping with laser is a perfect
example to demonstrate how precise
laser is.
Laser hair removal is very fast. The proce-
dure can treat large body parts like back
and legs in 60 to 90 minutes and smaller
areas like upper lips can be treated in 10 to
15 minutes maximum.
08
11. During the procedure of laser hair removal, a gentle beam of light is focussed on the hair
follicle which needs to be removed. The heat generated from the light ensures the follicle
is destroyed permanently. The medical term for this is “Selective Photothermolysis”.
It has to be noted that hair grows in several phases (Anagen, Telogen, Catagen) and a laser
can only affect the currently active growing hair follicles (early anagen). Hence multiple
sessions are required to target hair in all phases of growth in an area.

leaving the surrounding skin undamaged
Speed: Laser hair removal takes much shorter time
than other methods such as electrolysis. For exam-
ple: An upper lip procedure can be completed within
five minutes and areas such as legs and arms can be
done in 1 to 2 hours. Advancement in technology
means you are able to carry on with your daily activi-
ties straight away with no down time.
Permanent Results: Laser hair removal usually
results in permanent removal of unwanted hair. Stud-
ies have shown that 60 – 95% of the hair is perma-

15. Associated
Costs
The imminent benefits of laser hair removal vs. commonly used methods of hair removal
make this advanced procedure a hot favourite.
Traditional methods of hair removal including procedures like threading, trimming, shav-
ing, and waxing are never ending processes and are characterised by pain, ingrown
hairs, rough and uneven skin tone and expensive in long term. Also not to forget every
traditional method of hair removal can be done for specific body parts only. For eg:
threading can be done for eyebrows, upper chin and forehead only where as waxing can
be done for large body parts like hands, legs, etc.
LHR is a permanent and painless way of removing unwanted hair and can also result in a
soft and supple skin.
13
16. Because laser hair removal is such a revolutionary
technology with such fabulous benefits, people
assume that it must therefore be incredibly expensive.
However, you would be surprised to know how
cost-effective laser hair removal is when you com-
pare it to the traditional methods of hair removal.
For example: A person spends up to Rs. 100 per
sitting on underarms waxing and so approx. Rs.200
per month. Since this is a temporary hair removal pro-
cedure, one needs to continue this month on month to
maintain smooth hair-free underarms. So, 15 years
down the line, you would have spent Rs. 36,000 on
just underarms waxing and that’s quite a big amount
when compared to Rs. 15000 approx., one has to
invest in one-time laser hair removal.
All laser hair removal costs mentioned above are approximate costs. The actual cost
can only be determined by the size of the area treated, the required number of treat-
ment sessions, the color and thickness of the hair, and the client’s skin type.
The average person will need roughly 6-8 treatments to achieve 90% hair reduction.

Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most people find the current advanced laser treatments virtually painless and
quite comfortable especially when compared to other hair removal methods.
How many treatments will be needed?
Most people will require about 6 to 8 treatments; however, the actual number
may differ based on the density of hair, hair color, skin color and hormonal
status.
Why are 6-8 treatments needed?
Hair grows in several phases (Anagen, Catagen & Telogen) and a laser can
only affect the currently active growing hair follicles (Anagen). Hence, several
treatments are required to target hair in all phases of growth.
16

though it is advisable to wait until the third treatment.
What is the time gap between treatments?
A time interval of 6-8 weeks is usually needed between treatments to let
the dormant hair re-grow. These hairs can then be targeted by the lasers.
Can men get laser hair removal done too?
At Oliva, a significant proportion of our clients are men. The most popular
treatment areas in men are beard, chest and back.

moval session?

redness may be experienced by a few clients; this usually disappears
within a few hours. In a few clients transient pigmentary changes may
occur but will usually disappear within few days.

Laser hair removal is best done under the supervision of Cosmetic Dermatologists.
b) Equipment
Always ensure that you pick up a centre that uses US-FDA approved equipment. You can
take photographs of the equipment used and go online to check on the same. Do remember

established.
c) Volumes
It is always advisable to pick up centres after you find out how long the clinic has been there
and how many clients they have treated.
If a laser clinic has lot of experience in laser hair removal, you are more likely to feel at ease
going for treatment there.
d) Check the cleanliness of the treatment centres
Good centres usually would have clean reception, consultation and treatment rooms. Go by
how you feel about the above things.
