Secular Vs Non-secularSecular Vs Non-secular
Nichole Graham-TrestonNichole Graham-Treston
Introduction
• The birth of the first 'test-tube-baby' in 1978
made headlines all over the world. All the world,
with the exception of the Vatican, welcomed this
new development in human science.
• Today, assisted reproductive technology (ART)
refers not only to IVF but also to several
variations tailored to patients' unique conditions.
These procedures are usually paired with more
conventional therapies, such as fertility drugs, to
increase success rates. Almost one out of every
three cycles of ART results in the birth of a baby.
Reproductive Choices
• Non-secular:Non-secular: reproduction that takes place as a result
of sexual Intercourse between a male and a female.
• Secular:Secular: these are known as Assisted reproductive
technology (ART) and refers not only to In Vitro
Fertilization but also to several variations tailored to
patients' unique conditions. These procedures are
usually paired with more conventional therapies, such as
fertility drugs, to increase success rates. Almost one out
of every three cycles of ART results in the birth of a
baby.

1. Artificial Insemination by Husband1. Artificial Insemination by Husband
• AIH is used when the husband can produce semen, but his semen
is not quite adequate to achieve fertilization. The inadequacy of
semen can be attributed to low number of active sperms or the
inability of sperms to swim fast enough towards the ovum. AIH can
also be used when the husband is suffering from premature
ejaculation.
• In AIH, the sperm is obtained from the husband by his
masturbation and is then concentrated and 'improved' in the
laboratory. This semen is then introduced into the wife's cervix at
the best fertile days. The semen is introduced by an injection.
Depending on the regulations of each institute, the injection can be
carried out by a doctor or a nurse, or by the couple themselves
2. Artificial Insemination by
Donor
• AID is very similar to AIH. However, AID is used in cases
where the husband's semen is definitely inadequate in
quantity or quality. In the Western society, some single
women who wish to remain unmarried but have a child
also use this method to become pregnant. In England,
two to four thousand births in a year are attributed to AID
3. In Vitro Fertilization
• The first two methods were for cases where the husband's sperm lacked in
quality or quantity. IVF is a technique used mostly for women whose
fallopian tubes are blocked and cannot be remedied by surgical procedures.
Also for those who fail to conceive despite having normal fallopian tubes and
when all possible causes of infertility have been excluded. "In vitro" means a
test-tube.
• In IVF, one or more ova are removed from the mother through a small
syringe and placed in a test-tube. Then the sperm of the husband is used to
fertilize the ovum. After fertilization, the ovum is allowed to develop in the
test-tube till the eight-cell stage. Then it is implanted into the mother's
womb.
• IVF may also be used in cases where the husband's semen contains so few
sperms that it becomes difficult for them to fertilize an ovum in the fallopian
tube. By IVF, sperm of such a person is used to fertilize the ovum in a test-
tube.
In Vitro Fertilization
4. Surrogate Motherhood
• Surrogate motherhood is a by-product of the artificial
insemination. It has created great controversy in the legal
and ethical circles around the world, especially so after the
baby 'M' case of 1987.
• Surrogate motherhood means that a woman allows a
fertilized ovum of another couple to be injected into her
womb. Then she carries the child to its full term for the other
couple. This can be done free or in exchange for some money
as was the case in baby M's birth. This procedure of human
reproduction is adopted when a woman has a problem in
carrying her child to its full term
Surrogate Motherhood
5. Intracytoplasmic Sperm
Injection (ICSI)
• One of your partner's sperm is placed inside your egg
with a microscopic needle, rather than many sperm
positioned close to the outside of the egg, as in IVF, in a
dish in a lab. Once fertilization occurs, the resulting
embryo is placed in your uterus.
6. Gamete Intrafallopian
Transfer (GIFT)
• Your eggs are combined with your
partner's sperm in a dish in a lab, then
surgically injected into your fallopian
tubes using a laparoscope or fiber-thin
tube. Fertilization happens inside your
body, and the embryo implants
naturally. Although this procedure was
once commonly practiced, it's rarely
used today because the success with
IVF is far greater on average.
7. Zygote Intrafallopian
Transfer (ZIFT)
• As with GIFT, your eggs are mixed with your partner's
sperm in a dish in a lab, then surgically placed in your
fallopian tubes. But, as with IVF, your doctor will wait
until fertilization occurs to place your embryos inside of
you. This procedure is no longer commonly performed
because it has a lower success rate than IVF.
Non – secular Views
• Though orthodox Jewish opinion rejects masturbation, it supports
AIH if no other method causes the wife to become pregnant and
there has been a reasonable waiting period after marriage. Some
fundamentalist Protestants who have addressed the issue do not
oppose artificial insemination within the context of marriage.
• Even theologically liberal Catholics are inclined to agree with the
Vatican that the use of third-party genetic material violates the
sanctity of the marriage covenant. Some fundamentalist Protestants
even deem it tantamount to adultery. Some Jewish theologians
reject AID not because it could be construed as adultery -- they
argue that it is extramarital sexual intercourse and not the use of
the genetic materials of a third party that constitutes adultery -- but
because it could result in inheritance problems and because a child
with an unknown parentage may unwittingly commit incest. Reform
Jews, arguing that the latter is quite unlikely, consider AID
permissible.
Non – Secular Views contd.
• The Vatican regards it as a sin because it
splits sex from conception and because
unused embryos will die. Polish bishops
famously described the practice as “refined
abortion” and have threatened to
excommunicate MPs who vote for anything
other than to ban it.
Secular Views
• more than two thirds of Poles oppose any ban on IVF
treatment. And 85% of couples in the 25 to 30 age range told
a recent study that they would consider using IVF if
necessary. In the absence of any legislation, IVF is legal in
Poland – but it has to be done privately. The people, and the
European Union, have long been demanding a law that would
regulate the use of the technique and allow the state health
service to cover at least part of its costs.
• Persons believe that women have the right to decide what
type of reproductive methods to use
