What attracted you to work here?
When considering summer internships back
in 2014, it didn’t take long for me to work
out FJ was a top-quality business. I spent my
summer working in the Birmingham office
and returned full-time in September 2015.
How would you describe the culture?
You can’t put a price on happiness and it’s
really difficult not to be happy at Finlay
James! Everyone feels like an equal, everyone
is a friend, and we are all constantly helping
each other to become even better. I feel as
comfortable asking questions or offering
feedback to my MD as I would a new starter.
All in all, ‘positive’, ‘inclusive’ and ‘supportive’
sum up the atmosphere perfectly.
What advice would you give to a future trainee?
Give and accept feedback freely! It’s the best
way to ensure you and everyone around you
is constantly improving and getting closer to
hitting their goals.
What has been your personal highlight?
I have recently been working with a wonderful
candidate in New York. Today, I finally got to
deliver her the offer for her dream job. When
you genuinely care about the people you work
with, the money doesn’t even matter. I helped
change her life and it was such a great feeling!

What attracted you to work here?
The activeness and involvement of the
directors and owners John and Mark. That was
evident from the start. Really hands-on rather
than back seat drivers.
How would you describe the culture?
Very family orientated. You really feel looked
after and cared for here. People take a positive
interest in what you’re doing. Recruitment is
a dog eat dog industry. We compete with other
firms externally, but there are no arguments
or disputes internally. That doesn’t really
help anyone…
What advice would you give to a future trainee?
Show willingness and be open to speak to
your manager the way you would to your
friends. You don’t need to be over-familiar,
but a working relationship where both
employee and manager speak openly will
invariably get the best outcome.
What has been your personal highlight?
It would have to be the first international
placement I made four years ago. It was the
first for the company too. Since then that
client has become a key account. I work with
them all over the world now!

4. Carl Garrett
What attracted you to work here?
I first joined FJ in 2007 after almost 2 years in
the rec2rec market place. I was aware of the
earning potential having worked with a number
of recruiters. I made the decision to join FJ after
talking with Mark Neilan, one of the founding
directors. His passion and enthusiasm was
palpable and infectious. I first spoke to his
co-director, John Gaughan, after accepting the
role. His charismatic, friendly approach came
across immediately and these are the main
reasons I have worked here for 7 years.
How would you describe the culture?
Positive, professional and expert. These are
words which absolutely embody the culture,
ethos and values within the business at FJ.
What advice would you give to a future trainee?
Throw yourself into the role. Show grit and
don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. The
difference in effort of only 5% is often the
difference between people who don’t make it
in recruitment, and people who go on to have
long and successful careers. Most of all enjoy it!
What has been your personal highlight?
Every placement brings its own buzz and a
great sense of enjoyment and achievement!
Being the Top Performing Consultant in my
first two years was a great accolade for me too.

What attracted you to work here?
I started in late August 2015 after relocating
from London. The first thing that attracted me
to FJ was the earning potential but I accepted
the position because of the buzz. You could
feel it as soon as you walked in the door.
Everyone clearly gets on and that’s reflected
in how hard we work.
How would you describe the culture?
Definitely a work hard/have fun attitude.
Everyone has a great time at work and that
shows in the general atmosphere in the
office. Frequent team nights out, flexible
and understanding managers and rewards
for a job well done.
What advice would you give to a future trainee?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The biggest
mistake people make is suffering in silence.
There is over 250 years of recruitment
experience in this building – use it.
What has been your personal highlight?
My first ever placement was both my client
and my candidate – a ‘double bubble’. This was
also a brand new client that have since taken
a further two new roles - with a large fee.
Definitely a highlight!

6. Social
Vicky Parry
What attracted you to work here?
I started at Finlay James in 2010, in a much
different role to the one I have now. I wanted
to create a career for myself and could
see that Finlay James would offer me that
opportunity and progression. FJ also seemed
like a company that was going to grow, and it
certainly has!
How would you describe the culture?
FJ is a great place to work. There is a real
mixture of people with a vast range of
backgrounds. Everyone is friendly and we
are more like a family. There’s always a social
event to look forward to and plenty of jokes
flying around the office.
What advice would you give to a future trainee?
Throw yourself in 110%. You only get out what
you put in! Everyone is willing to help so ask
as many questions as you want. Even if the
person you ask can’t help, they’ll know who
can! Listen to any feedback you are given and
take it on board.
What has been your personal highlight?
There have been a few highlights over the
years, various promotions, seeing the company
grow and hit record months. Personally,
my best was being awarded Employee of the
Year 2014.

What attracted you to work here?
I started in 2013. I liked the small company
culture. Flat management style and I liked how
I sat alongside the team.
How would you describe the culture?
Positive, professional and expert. But people
also have a lot of fun, as well as working
really hard. I’ve made some close friends
working here.
What advice would you give to a future trainee?
Work as hard as you can. If you enjoy what you
are doing then of course it makes it easier.
What has been your personal highlight?
Being put forward for the North West
Business Insider’s Young Professional of the
Year (Business Developer) Award and then
discovering that I have been shortlisted was
definitely a recent highlight. Also winning
‘Rookie of the Year’ in 2013/14 and then
‘Top Biller’ in 2014/15 and on the back of
this getting the opportunity to manage and
develop my own team at age 23.
