– Main Idea (Thesis must be stated)
 What is the issue? What makes it important?
 Who are the parties involved in the issue?
 When did it occur? Is it still going on?
 How is it/ or did it take place?
 There should be some indication as to where YOU
stand on the issue
 What statistics or facts illustrate the issue?
 Remember to begin your persuasion here [What
opinion would you like the reader/viewer to have
when you are done.]

 When did it occur? Is it still going on?
 How is it/ or did it take place?

 Introduction
 Teen homelessness is a major problem in the US
that affects an estimated 1.35 million children/teens
(3.5 million people total) in the year 2000.
 Teens are either runaways or thrown away (rejected
from the home by parents or caretakers.)
 Every year, an estimated 1.3 and 1.5 million teens
runaway or are thrown away in the United States.
 Teens either leave the home with no intention to
come back or are told they cannot return and given
no alternative home.
 While on the street, teen are exposed to drugs,
violence and sexual abuse.

  • 2. Research Project  After this lesson students will learn to: – Write a research paper  Write an outline using MS Word – Present on a controversial issue  Create an effective PowerPoint presentation  Use persuasive techniques (video, music) to communicate a message about the topic
  • 3. Research Project Topics  Environmental Issues – What and What – Examples include:  Human Rights Violations – Who and Who – Examples include:  Earth Day  Woman’s Rights  Animal Rights  Child Exploitation  Pollution  Paternal Rights  Social Issues – Who and What – Examples include:  Homelessness  Education  Immigration
  • 4. Research Project: Paper Outline  There are five (5) Main Parts of the paper: – Introduction – Cause & Effect – Compare & Contrast – Validity & Reliability – Conclusion  Finish with a Bibliography or Reference page
  • 5. Research Project: Paper Outline  Introduction – Main Idea (Thesis must be stated)  What is the issue? What makes it important?  Who are the parties involved in the issue?  When did it occur? Is it still going on?  How is it/ or did it take place?  There should be some indication as to where YOU stand on the issue  What statistics or facts illustrate the issue?  Remember to begin your persuasion here [What opinion would you like the reader/viewer to have when you are done.]
  • 6. Research Project: Paper Outline  Cause and Effect – Why is it / or did it take place? – Which elements are influencing the issue? – What effect does the issue have on those involved? – Does this issue affect most people? How so? – What will happen if nothing changes? Will there be an effect in the future? What might that be?
  • 7. Cause and Effect Sexual Abuse, Drug Abuse Teen Homelessness
  • 8. Research Project: Paper Outline  Compare and Contrast – What are the opposing views on the issue? – How are they similar? – How are they different? – What are the strongest points for both sides?  Make sure to strengthen YOUR view with facts – What causes people to view the same issue differently? What are the factors?     Countries Cultures Religions Political Affiliations
  • 9. Research Project: Paper Outline  Validity & Reliability – What makes the information you found valid? How do we know it is true? – What relevant examples or scenarios relating to the issue did you find? – What evidence supports your view? – What makes the people you quote qualified to support your claim?     Experts Professors Eye witnesses Survivors
  • 10. Research Project: Paper Outline  Conclusion – Here is where you wrap up your argument and make a final “push” for your point. – What will happen if nothing is done about the issue? – What is your “call to action?” What do you want the reader/viewer to DO as a result of your paper and presentation?     Write Congressman or Congresswoman Sign a petition Join a protest Boycott a company or industry, etc.
  • 11.   • 12. Research Project Paper: MS Word  Begin by creating a cover page
  • 13. Research Project Paper: MS Word  Go to outline and begin typing the required sections.
  • 14. Research Project Paper: MS Word •Promote each required section.
  • 15. Research Project Paper: MS Word  Demote the content of each section that you write to the body.
  • 16. Research Project Paper: MS Word  Begin filling in each part of the paper until each section is complete.
  • 17. Research Project: Power Point Presentation  The purpose of the presentation is as follows: – to persuade peers and teacher to become motivated enough to take action on the issue in question.  Students will present to the entire class  Students MUST use Power Point  Presentation must be saved on USB.
  • 18. Research Project: Power Point Presentation  Begin creating your presentation by: – Opening Power point
  • 19. Research Project: Power Point Presentation  Write title and subtitle information on your first slide
  • 20. Research Project: Power Point Presentation  Next create new slides using the outline you created in MS Word 1 2
  • 21. Research Project: Power Point Presentation  Select your project and insert.
  • 22. Research Project: Power Point Presentation  Your outline will appear. You will see the new slides on the left of your screen.
  • 23. Research Project: Power Point Presentation  Delete any duplicate or blank slides. The 5 sections of the paper should remain.
  • 24. Research Project: Power Point Presentation  Begin typing the questions to Introduction.
  • 25. Research Project: Power Point Presentation  Next, replace each question with the answer you wrote from your paper.
  • 26. Research Project: Power Point Presentation  Continue this process until you have finished the entire paper and have a slide for each section.
  • 27. Research Project: Power Point Presentation  You may choose to add pizzazz to your presentation by inserting the following: – Pictures – Clip Art – Movies – Sound
  • 28. Compare and Contrast  Insert a Venn Diagram by – Insert  Smart Art

Research Project: Power Point Presentation  Introduction  Teen homelessness is a major problem in the US that affects an estimated 1.35 million children/teens (3.5 million people total) in the year 2000.  Teens are either runaways or thrown away (rejected from the home by parents or caretakers.)  Every year, an estimated 1.3 and 1.5 million teens runaway or are thrown away in the United States.  Teens either leave the home with no intention to come back or are told they cannot return and given no alternative home.  While on the street, teen are exposed to drugs, violence and sexual abuse.
