Students as Tutor
How does electronic learning environment works? How can I login from home on the school system
to take a look at my current grade list? Students are often perfectly capable to pass on certain
knowledge and skills to peers in an understandable way. They still know very well what the
difficulty is about that one act. Make use of available expertise. You learn most from explaining to
others.
What the use of ICT can yield
Time savings
Time savings for teacher and students. An instruction that students can view at home, provides
extra time during class to do other things. An online test can save a lot of checking. It is always
good to see how much time you have to invest and how much will yield in the long term. Students
can also help each other more easily. For example with the help of Google docs they can divide the
tasks among themselves and help each other.
Students learn to use ICT for the profession
ICT plays a role in all subjects. Take a good look at what your students should be able to do with
ICT. They must be able to correctly compile a cover letter in word, they must be able to make
calculations with excel and they must be able to correctly interpret a translation with a
translation program. Do not think that students can automatically learn that. Young people are
skilled in operating the buttons, but the correct use of all digital options is something they really
have to learn. Patience is an important quality here.
ICTs for Sustainable Development
ICT means Information Communication and Technology. That means that we can give and receive
information trough technology. Sustainable Development means ongoing progress. To exchange
information online, especially in the education field, you must have some basic skills. ICTs isn’t all
about computers, it’s about how we use the technology. When studying ICT you will learn how to
build project management and numeracy skills. It also helps you think in a logical way to solve
problems. To learn about ICT you need to at least have access to a computer, PC, IPAD ETC, if you
don’t own one. Beside that you must have internet access as well. ICT is important in many
industries, but I find it more important in the education field, because education is the key to
success.
The time that adults had all wisdom in lease and children entered the school as blank pages is
behind us, with the internet as big catalyst. It appears that schools that address their students on
their expertise, let students solve technical problems and let students think along in the school’s
ICT policy achieve a lot . Sometimes students can understand each other better. Students who
contribute to working with ICT at school also show more involvement and motivation of the school
and their studies and they become media guide in the use of digital media. Deploying students in
the ICT field can be done in many ways. When choosing activities among other things we look at the
questions that exist at the school, the possibilities that the school have, the age and level of the
students and the already existing ICT –infrastructure.
Golden tip
Benefits of using technology
Improves engagement
When technology is integrated into lessons, students are expected to be more interested in the subjects
they are studying. Technology provides different opportunities to make learning more fun and enjoyable
in terms of teaching same things in new ways. For instance, delivering teaching through gamification,
taking students on virtual field trips and using other online resources. What is more, technology can
encourage a more active participation in the learning process which can be hard to achieve trough a
traditional lecture environment.
Improves knowledge retention
Students who are engaged and interested in things they are studying, are expected to have a better
knowledge retention. As mentioned before, technology can help to encourage active participation in the
classroom which also is a very important factor for increased knowledge retention. Different forms of
technology can be used to experiment with and decide what works best for students in terms of
retaining their knowledge.
Encourages individual learning
No one learns in the same way because of different learning styles and different abilities. Technology
provides great opportunities for making learning more effective for everyone with different needs. For
example, students can learn at their own speed, review difficult concepts or skip ahead if they need to.
What is more, technology can provide more opportunities for struggling or disabled students. Access to
the internet gives students access to a broad range of resources to conduct research in different ways,
which in turn can increase the engagement.
Encourage collaboration
Students can practice collaboration skills by getting involved in different online activities. For instance,
working on different projects by collaborating with others on forums or by sharing documents on their
virtual learning environments. Technology can encourage collaboration with students in the same
classroom, same school and even with other classrooms around the world.
Students can learn useful life skills through technology
By using technology in the classroom, both teachers and students can develop skills essential for the 21st
century. Students can gain the skills they will need to be successful in the future. Modern learning is
about collaborating with others, solving complex problems, critical thinking, developing different forms
of communication and leadership skills, and improving motivation and productivity. What is more,
technology can help develop practical skills, including creating presentations, learning to differentiate
reliable from unreliable sources on the internet, maintaining proper online etiquette, and writing
emails. These are very important skills that can be developed in the classroom.
Benefits for teachers
With countless online resources, technology can help improve teaching. Teachers can use different apps
or trusted online resources to enhance the traditional ways of teaching and to keep students more
engaged. Virtual lesson plans, grading software and online assessments can help teachers save a lot of
time. This valuable time can be used for working with students who are struggling. What is more, having
virtual learning environments in schools enhances collaboration and knowledge sharing between
teachers.
Homeschooling during COVID-19 crisis
Around the world, schools in over 100 countries are closed to protect against the spread of
coronavirus, affecting the education of nearly 1 billion children. For the lucky ones, homeschooling
will take the place of the classroom.
In some parts of the world, it will be down to parents to keep their child’s education going as best
as they can. But digital technologies are increasingly being used to deliver lessons to children at
home.
Until the pandemic closed schools, only a minority of children were taught at home. Today, things
look different. Around the world, schools are using existing platforms from the likes of Microsoft
and Google as well as conferencing apps like Zoom to deliver lessons for their pupils. IN the UK ,
virtual gym classes delivered by fitness instructors have proved extremely popular.
Meanwhile France has created “my classroom at home”, which can be accessed on devices a laptop
or a smartphone. In Japan, private sector companies are offering free online courses to children in
lockdown through a government digital platform which allows students and parents to choose
which one they study.
As more schools are close, we must pay special attention to the most vulnerable, not just
physically, but also academically and psychologically. All responses must be designed to avoid
deepening educational and social inequality.
Schools and teachers should no longer be seen as “ knowledge delivery systems” Teachers should
empowered to take greater ownership of what they teach and how they teach it.
