New York City is an important market for vehicle electrification due to its high population density, reliance on public transit, and fleet vehicles. Electrifying NYC's 29,000 vehicle municipal fleet and 5,100 transit bus fleet could eliminate over 96 million gallons of annual gasoline consumption. Private fleets including Con Edison, shipping companies, and food distributors operate thousands more vehicles that could also be electrified. Medium and heavy-duty electric vehicles are already available and electrifying fleets can start immediately while providing grid services to reduce costs and stabilize the electric grid. Widespread passenger electric vehicle adoption will take longer but fleet electrification is a practical first step to reducing oil dependence and gaining public acceptance of electric transportation.
