  5. 5. 5 What Is aState Of Being Verb? State of being verbs are frequently called linking verbs because they link the subject of the sentence with information about it. State of being are a small group of verbs that do not convey action. They are linking verbs. The verb 'be' is the most important linking verb. Their main purposes are this verb is to provide as a link that joins the subject to a word in the predicate that adds meaning to the subject. Here I describe 7 state of being verbs: Is, am, are, was, were, shall, will Sentence: 01. The Student is tall. In the first sentence, is links with the student to inform about her-the fact that she is tall. That is her state of being.
  6. 6. 6 02. This candy tastes so sweet. In this sentence, tastes links candy to inform about it its sweetness. Did you think taste was an action verb?. It is when the subject is doing the tasting. But here, the candy isn't doing any tasting. The candy itself tastes sweet. That is its state of being.
  7. 7. 7 Present Tense IS, Am and Are First Person Second Person Here is the three words IS, Am and Are actually these are verbs, but we don’t call it action verbs. These are only simple present tense of the verb be or we say, these words are related with the Be Family. The words of the be family use with the pronoun, I, we, you, he, she, it, they When you talk about yourself, you use First Person “I” we call this the subject pronoun and correct form of the verb be in the first person is Am, so you say “ I am ”. When you talk about the second person, the subject pronoun for the second person is You and the correct form of the verb be is Are, so you say You are.
  8. 8. 8 Third Person In the Form of Plural First Person Plural Second Person Plural When you talking about the third person the subject pronoun in the third person is HE/She/It and the correct form of the verb be is Is, so you say, He is, she is or it is. When you talking about the group of people that include yourself, you use the first person plural, the subject pronoun in the first person plural is We, and the correct form of the verb be is Are, so you say, We Are. The second person plural is about the group of people that is not include yourself, then you use the subject pronoun You, the correct form of the verb be is Are.
  9. 9. 9 Third Person Plural Here is Table to help you remember how to use is, am and are: The third person plural is when you talk about the group of people that is not include you or any of the people whose talking to you then you use the subject pronoun They, so you say They are.
  10. 10. 10 Sentences I am Nazish. I am not Anum. She is Miss Bakhtawar. She is a student. He is my father. He is a policeman. He is not a lawyer. You are a guest. You are not my friend. We are in the same class, but we are not on the same group. They are good friends. They are not enemies.
  11. 11. 11 Learn these short forms called contractions: I am = I’m You are =you’re He is = he’s She is = she’s It is = it’s Am not =aren’t (use only in question) Is not = isn’t Are not = aren’t In questions use aren’t as a contraction of am not. For example, you can say: I’m taller than you, aren’t? But in statement you say: I’m not as old as you.
  12. 12. 12 Use the verb is with singular nouns and are with plural nouns. My father is a lawyer. Rex is a clever dog. A duck is a kind of bird. The playground is full of people today. My house is near the university. These questions are too difficult. The balloons are very colorful. Those people are very busy. Sana and Moomal are in the kitchen.
  13. 13. 13 Present Progressive Tense. The PRESENT PROGRESSIVE TENSE indicates continuing action, something going on present time. This tense is formed with the helping "to be" verb, in the present tense, plus the present participle of the verb (with an –ing ending): They are still sleeping. They are swimming in the sea. What are they doing? What’s happening? I am writing a letter. We use present progressive tense to talk about actions in the present, or things that are still going on or happening now. Present Progressive Tense Example Sentences
  14. 14. 14 We make the present progressive tense like this: am + present participle is + present participle are + present participle The present participle is the form of a verb ending with -ing. For example: show + ing = showing come + ing = coming go + ing = going We have to double the last letter of some verbs before we add -ing. For example: get + ing = getting rob + ing = robbing nod + ing = nodding stop + ing = stopping jog + ing = jogging
  15. 15. 15 Examples: Are you coming with us to the party tonight? When are you having lunch? Patricia is returning later this week. They are arranging a special dinner and they want us to come. I am not watching the game this evening, I have homework. He is not going to the party tonight. We use the present progressive tense to talk about things you have planned to do, or things that are going to happen in the future. To form the present progressive tense, so we use am, is and are as helping verbs.
  16. 16. 16 The Future Tense The rule of British English is that shall is used with first person pronouns (i.e. I and we) to form the future tense, while will is used with second and third person forms (i.e. you, he, she, it, they). For example: We use the future tense for those things that have not happened up till now, but are going to happen. So we use the verbs shall and will as helping verbs to form the future tense.
  17. 17. 17 Examples: I shall be late. They will not have enough food. We shall play a match of Cricket after lunch. You will be sick if you eat too much. I hope it won’t rain tomorrow. Sana is ill. She will not be at the party. You will enjoy visiting University. Shoaib will be back for dinner. He will make lots of friends at his new school.
  18. 18. 18 Future Continuous Rules: Helping verb “will be” and “shall be” is used in sentence. 1st form of verb + ing (present participle) is used as main verb in sentence. Example: Sana will be waiting for you. I will be feeling healthy tomorrow. Future continuous is used to express a continued or an action which are ongoing in future. For example, “I will be waiting for you tomorrow”, it conveys ongoing nature of an action (waiting) which will happen in future. Positive sentences 1. We shall be shifting to a new home next year. 2. He will be flying a kite. It will be raining tomorrow. 3. She will be enjoying her vacations Negative sentences 1. We shall not be shifting to a new home next year. 2. He will not be flying a kite. 3. She will not be enjoying her vacations. Interrogative sentence 1. Shall we be changing to a new home next year? 2. Will he be flying a kite? 3. Will it be drizzling tomorrow?
  19. 19. 19 Conclusion State of being is often considered one of the hardest parts of English grammar. The key to successful usage of State of being is memorization and review. This exercise will set the stage for successful usage throughout the rest of the year. The student will see objectives on the first link to find the definition of a State of being. There the student will also find the different types of State of being: is, am, are, shall and will. The student will see on the second topic to find a use of state of being in present time. The student will see on the Third topic to find a use of state of being in Future time. Each practice exercise grades itself so that the students know directly if they have an understanding of state of being.
